I apprecaited the old site for it’s “retro” web sensibilities, but I am also glad to see something more usable and coherent! Bonus Randy is always welcome.

PS - A way to sort modules by date would be nice bonus.

It’s definitely a legend, and a part of NLC history, but Andrew is happy to be moving away from it into a new era :slight_smile:

Sweet, that looks great! I think this will actually make more people consider NLC modules which can only be a good thing. It’s easy to be shallow. :ghost:

gotta admit i too love the retro simplicity of the old site but this is looking good and it’s much easier to find a module i’m looking for. :slightly_smiling_face: hope he never holds back on the diy content, lots of great stuff in there.

No worries there, NLC is all for DIY synth, I think it is best to build stuff yourself, good for your mind, body, soul & bank account.

Forrest has done a great job setting up the new site. He had to spend a lot of time trawling thru my years of random blog posts and photos to sort all the data. Hopefully he will recover from the ordeal quickly ::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

OK, one more reply to the Let’s Splosh post. I’ve been using it A LOT to build new oscillator waveforms lately. Plug in four oscillators, mash together any positive/negative outputs into a new lovely waveform.

It’s particularly nice with Cold Mac by sending any positive/negative pair to the stereo mixer and panning them around. In general, it’s fun sending positive/negative to anything with two inputs. NLC Resonate, MI Clouds, a stereo filter etc. etc. etc.

hey this sounds great, thanks for the tip! i have a few cold macs so looking forward to trying this.
i’m just about to build my splosh in the next couple of days, anything specific i should know before diving in? also please post some audio if you can, would love to hear what you’re getting out of these configurations:)

Might be a bit unclear, but every oscillator sound except one is from the Let’s Splosh nest. In this patch the inputs for Let’s Splosh are:

  1. Tides slightly skewed/wavefolded, jumping in octaves
  2. Square from Compare 2’s XOR, Tides as input
  3. A static Sinc Iter, saw-ish
  4. A static Plaits “two analog waveforms”

Spent this lats weekend building NLC modules. Finished 2xLFO, Bi-Di Choppers, bong0 and Vactrol PiLL. Good fun and they also worked after some minor surgery and help from Andrew.

To celebrate I recorded this patch:

It’s almost completely based around 2xLFO which supplies or influences all modulation and gates with some help from a dual window comparator and Let’s Splosh. Bi-Di Choppers is switching some things now and then. There are Sloths and Resonate in there too, I’m pretty sure.

Despite its being largely surplus to requirements in a small (104 hp) case, I couldn’t bring myself to part with hyperchaos deluxe. Consequently I have a small NLC department in place here. Modulation sources galore. I love the white panel/transparent knob combo.

I’d really like a delay no more too.

While we’re on the topic of let’s splosh: I think it’s magnificent. Mixing audio and CV gives all sorts of strange results, including distorted attenuation and peculiar stereo images. A brill module well worth making space for.

How are you finding dual lfo/vco? Planning on making one of these next—especially curious about the quality of the sync (I gather it’s quite hard?) and the stepped output if you have any thoughts about those they’d be appreciated :slight_smile: Those clear knobs r cute ^>^

I’ve had it only a few days; I’ve yet to try the sync ins, but the stepped outputs I like very much! I’ve been using them to CV delay lines. Each one’s being clocked by the other oscillator is a pleasantly strange arrangement. Sorry I’ve no more to say on it at the moment. It’s hectic at home during lockdown and I’m lucky if I can manage half an hour a day on the synth.

Is anyone using the Sauce of Unce? The random output gets stuck on mine and needs a voltage in the cv input in order to wake up (an offset from Maths will do the trick or an LFO). I bought it second hand so I’m not sure if it’s just a part of the circuit or if something is amiss. The stored random output is working exactly as I would expect.

Also the high and flat noise output levels are pretty low - not such a big deal as I have ways to boost the gain but I’m wondering if the person who built it used a weird resistor value.

Finally picked up a Hyperchaos Deluxe from @DeltaTucanae. It’s now in my second system that is in development, and I don’t see it leaving anytime soon. I recorded an improv with it doing almost everything after spending most of the day yesterday patching with it. There are just not enough videos of NLC modules in use, so here’s a longer example of HD controlling almost everything. It’s obviously chaotic and noisy, but the levels are tame. All live audio, no post aside from a 6db volume boost (it’s maybe still a touch quiet), because my GoMix:Pro records to an annoyingly low level.

Patch notes:

  • Voices are Polygogo and Pico Drums. HD -Z is going through 321 and then to the uO_C to quantize with Gate X triggering the quantizer.
  • HD W is patched to Polygogo’s Order, X to Teeth, Y to Roll. Polygogo’s Y (audio) out is going to QPAS (originally PG was self patched with X when building this, but I probably should have patched X back into QPAS as well).
  • HD Z is patched to QPAS Radiate-L, -Y to Q (VERY little going through), -X to Freq1, -W to Radiate-R. I left the !!! inputs unpatched because there’s already so much animation going on, it seemed like too much. SP left and right are going out to Mimeophon.
  • Mimephon is being clocked with HD Gate Y. The Mimeophon Gate Out is being patched back into HD’s Rate input to “complete the conversation” in Make Noise parliance, and also clocking Erbe-Verb.
  • HD Gate X and Y drive the two inputs of Pico Drums. PD out is going to Erbe-Verb.
    -øchd’s Rate is being fed by HD Sgn(X). Output 4 is patche to EV’s Decay. Output 8 is patched to EV’s Depth input.
    -EV and Mimeophon are mixed via Hyrlo and then they pass through Ooots to my GoMix:Pro.
    -I adjust the controls on both EV and Mimeophon while playing. Generally looking to helping them to emphasize themselves more or less depending on whether HD is in an ebe or flow state.
  • Similarly, I am massaging the 321 and Polygogo to try to nudge the notes around and create change or push them back towards more active states.
  • Finally, most of the performance is really trying to divine Hyperchaos. It’s more playable than I expected it to be. Rate has a dramatic effect on the beharior. I eventually unpatch it and it slows down dramatically near the end. For most of it, I kept -Z selfpatched to the CV input, which seems to have let me introduce more stillness intentionally. I’m not entirely sure how Climax and Bifrucate actually influenced things - which is somewhat the point, but they do introduce noticable change as you adjust them!
  • Additionally, at the start, noise is patched from Quantum Rainbow 2 to the HD CV into in addition to -Z via stack cable. I eventually remove the noise, and re-introduce it few times. Toward the end, I patched noise into rate in lieu of the Mimeophon clock and it ended up producing a traditional techno beat for a moment, which was fascinating.

The LED’s used are actually too bright, which I’ll have to sort out, but I looking forward divining more abouts it’s various moods and temperments. And thank you! It’d been too long since I actually recorded something.
