it’s interesting… i’ve used it to generate chaotic gates to trigger teletype or open a LPG, or “strum” just friends. I’ve used it a little bit to route other signals although not as much. I find unless I’m trying to use it specifically I’ll only use it if I want to manually control a gate, in which case it can be a fun and unruly tool—but certainly not a precise tool— for that job. I find it very beautiful to see and it comes in handy in a case where I probably am really more in need of a mult sometimes. The use that I got it for (triggering teletype) went out the window when i discovered you can trigger scripts using the F1-F9 keys so I’m not sure it’ll will stay in there long term. Wish there was more people sharing weird things they do with it but I feel like maybe the low cost/low bar for entry makes people less interested in taking the time to experiment with it than they would with something more expensive maybe its just too niche or not interesting enough though lol i dunno

I’ve finally been able to set up a little space in the living room to make music. TBH it’s not a studio, but rather a rehearsal space, since I’ve set it up to practice for live performances and random jamming.

The set up changes constantly, depending on what I’m focusing on at the moment. Right now it’s the SK-1 and the Octatrack and some pedals.
The context makes it perfect to create some houseplant tunes!

I have an SK1 and have kept it in it’s original state despite the recurring urge to bend it. I would be too sad if I bricked it. Believe it or not there are some really cool things you can do with an unbent SK1.

If you’re recording acoustic sources often, then I can’t recommend enough you rent a pair of Schoeps to try or since you have those nice SD preamps with 70+db of clean gain, there’s bound to be a studio nearby with a pair of Josephson e22s, which sound great on everything and have crazy high SPL tolerance.

The difference in transient response is night and day on mallet, plectrum, and bowed instruments. I would lose all my rack gear for one good pair of microphones.

Schoeps would be my first choice…but in the last 20 years, I haven’t found the permission to get a pair. When I got the SD 702 for field recording, it almost happens. But then traveling with a 5000$+ gear got me scared.
Now, music belongs to the pleasure side of my life. It’s quite relaxing knowing that it doesn’t have to generate any finance income.

Yes. I know what you mean. I get nervous traveling with microphones, especially ones that cannot be replaced.

Here are cheaper options that sound good.

AKG 460b (I have a friend who has a pair and they sound excellent and uncolored. These have a transformer too which takes edge off transients slightly, vs 480b which has different design and more detail)
Gefell M300 (more colored, more lift, and faster/articulate)
MBHO MBNM 440 or KA200 (high quality mics, bit of presence)
Beyer MC930 (thicker sounding, never brittle, solidly made)
Oktavia MK-012 (good overall sound but can have noise handling issues)

Had an absolutely joyful afternoon of improvisation with Mr Henk van Glabbeek. His passion for ethnic string and wind instruments is very inspiring. His openness and curiosity towards my instrument resulted in a very nice collaboration.
