This is my corner. The only things not pictured are a guitar capo and a few plectrums!!

After a long period of inactivity, I finally have another “modular spaces” article online, this time featuring @bjarlstedt and @mqtthiqs.

http://www.horizontalpitch.com/2019/06/modular-spaces-pt-4-focused-desks/

There’s a lot of photos and stories in this thread that likely would deserve to be featured in an article, I can certainly think of a few that I was planning to talk about, but I’m afraid this might be the last one, since I’ll have to take another break from writing articles, once I’ve finished those I still have in the works.

I’d like to take the occasion to thank everybody who has shared their pictures in this thread! It’s been very inspiring and interesting to see how much sometimes can be done with very little.
I hope this thread will remain active in the future!

What’s that case? It’s lovely.

Wow, just had a blast reading through this and checking out everyone’s workspaces.
I’m moving into a new space in a few days and it’ll be my first time with a dedicated (small) workspace for my gear. Super inspiring to see what y’all have created.

Now tinier and more focused.

Touched by His Noodly Appendage! What does your FSM module do?

Good eye! Greetings to a fellow Pastafarian. :innocent:

My old case (action shot below) was basically a FSM altar, so I had to carry some of His Noodly Goodness forward into the new smaller rig.

The module is a euro conversion of a TC Electronic Flashback Mini pedal. It has 5:1 and 1:5 level shifting and a regulated 9V supply piggybacked on the back. I did a few conversions of full sized Toneprint pedals several years ago, they are great too!

Is converting pedals into modules a service you might offer to the occasional requester?

I imagine you might find some takers amongst us!

I can’t believe I only just made the connection between modular and FSM… it seems a uniquely suitable instrument to use in honour of the noodliness. Also, that gig looks awesome, FSM eurorack and electric violin on the floor of a geodesic dome tent? nice

Unfortunately, no conversions for hire–it’s extremely uneconomical work. I have considered selling my TC Hall of Fame reverb, Flashback delay, and Transition delay conversions since it’s unlikely I will have a large enough modular to accommodate them again.

What kind of stuff do you do with this studio corner?
It looks so small and cool, but for my own stuff I feel like I always end up choose between having a small instrument that is a small collection of stuff like you have here that I can do some limited stuff with, or I have to have more gear to fill all the roles. Except if I go only ITB of course.

Anyways would love to hear what this little studio setup “is to you”.

It’s everything!

I’m primarily a live performer, so I need a flexible, highly portable, and complete instrument that I can play an hour-long set with. What makes this possible for me in such a small modular is the combination of Teletype, Telex expanders (especially the TXo), and Grid. I feel I have more control and more resources than I did a few years ago with my 9U X 96hp rig, and it all fits in a small gig bag that weighs a a bit over 7kg! I don’t feel limited at all.

My music is here and there (though I don’t usually record my live techno sets), so you can judge for yourself: https://www.google.com/search?q=prettyhowtown

Thank you for sharing! Definitly matches the idea of a focused setup I would say.
And also that your music “allowes” this types of setup. Great stuff.

Do you have some live techno sets available somewhere? I’m trying to work towards a 1 to 2 hour liveset and would love to know how yours sound (and what your process is like/how you progress through your set if you want to share).

All of my gear is currently stuck in a corner of our kitchen, I can still do things but I have no space and need suggestions on how to get rid of my family please… :joy:

Been making stuff using these various.
bits and bobs

Roland SP-404 /Roland SP-404 SX
Roland SP-808 (needs attn) /Akai S-2000 /Sony CF720 tape machine/ 9 note Haang drum.1 center note and 8 tone fields, D3/ A3/ C4/ D4/ E4/ F4/ G4/ A4/C5.
/9 tone tongue drum/Sony Minidisc Recorder.

I also have various guitars kicking around that have to be kept in a separate room at the moment… I’m trying to convince my wife to let me take over the living room as we never seem to actually use it for much anyway and I’d really appreciate one dedicated space!

Digi 003 Rack + Antec Sonata 3, that’s very 2008 indeed, I remember using the same setup (on a not much larger desk ^^) around that same time !

I wish I had a permanent space for music making, I currently work from the navigation table, but once I’m done. everything goes back in the boxes. I love seeing all these minimal setups in this thread!

Your space is also kind of maximal, considering what’s outside the window.

I love, though, that you work from the navigation table. Seems fitting.

I have some more modules now and usually much more of a rat’s nest. Plus, more often than not, it’s easier just to work on thefloor:
