I need more desk space. I stopped treating my laptop like a laptop, got an external monitor and keyboard, which has been great - except it eats up desktop. I like the idea of building up instead of building out. Sturdy shelves that can hold modular / analog gear above the desk would be fantastic. I see people in this thread doing that a bit, but…any other pointers / examples would be great.

You could use any two-tiered keyboard stand with some boards on it for shelves, which is what I started using “just for a bit until I make something better…” around ten years ago.

The irony of you writing this - given that part of the reason why I recommitted to expanding my laptop was Madrona software. THE IRONY.

Good idea though, also was thinking about smooshing in a shop-shelf somewhere…seems like multiple tables worth of space. I’m accumulating dusty old stuff. I know that’s not what this thread is about, so I apologize, I’m failing multiple minimalism tests here.

Looks like a Mackie Big Knob Studio.

What is the black box with the silver knob on the left side in front of the monitor?

That’s a Mackie Big Knob Studio, a monitor controller that listens to my “slantRant” mix and my main mix from my big mixer, then routes one or both (plus the sound of my Mac) to either or both of my two speakers and two sets of headphones. Very handy box, pretty good quality, and quite affordable. I wish I could afford a Drawmer or something classier, but this one does the job just fine.

This one definitely sprawls a bit but it’s my temporary music hideout.

For the past 4 years I patched while standing upright. But over the past 6 months I grew to not like that anymore. I felt rushed, restless. A few weeks back I found this desk and switched to sitting. I noticed it instantly influenced my workflow. I’ve been doing more complex and long form patches than before. I am happy with this new situation and the inspiration it brings.

Maybe not as tiny, and it’s a bit of a mess. Been fiddling with the 4u84 for the last few months and the Octatrack for about 8 months (I pulled all modular off the table for that time) and have basically ignored the larger case for over a year. You can see I often use the keyboard on the laptop since the external is trapped behind the 4u.

It’s also my record room and wardrobe room (outside the view of the pano

Anyway, bored and waiting for dinner, so here’s a window into my soundlab and happy place.

Shape 65 :heart::heart: I love mine so much.

Actually the Shape 50s. I kind of wish I had gone the distance and gotten the 65s though for a bit more low-end, but these are quite punchy for the speaker size, so I’m still pleased!

Ah yes! Would be curious to hear the difference in the low end on the Shape 50 actually, it’s true that it’s great on the 65 but I’ve heard for the size the 50 were pretty great too. I’d only ever heard stuff like the Solo Be in studio, having focals in my studio is a dream come true and the Shape series is really incredible.

beautiful setup. what desk is that, if you don’t mind?

Thanks! The desk is a Beliani Alloa (white): https://www.beliani.com/home-desk-white-with-dark-wood-alloa.html

For the moment (whilst I practice for a gig on the 25th), my studio is this piece of board on a two-tier keyboard stand. I quite enjoy the stripped down feeling

finally starting to get a solid little workspace together in the corner of our living room! feels compact, yet everything can be moved out at ease when necessary!

also broke out the tape machine yesterday after a long hiatus and that feels great!

also put up posters of shows played with good friends such as @dan_derks and @barnjazz and gianni andreatta, and nick butcher of sonnenzimmer
