Those who speak do not know.

I’ve always found this particular characterization of wisdom to be nonsensical but certainly is convenient for the powers that be.

while I agree with overal sentiment (I am using consumer level speakers which I know really well and on which I have listened to a lot of music) I think the second group is also somewhat right. I mean acustically there is always something to improve and they probably are pursuing this ideal acoustic conditions and judge everyone who ask as someone who will/want to follow same path (but of course you shouldn’t call people ugly because of that).
But if you want to create music just use whatever you have and are familiar with and let your voice be heard

(The most interesting part of what Lao Tsu said, is that he spoke. From what I’ve heard, he probably won’t object to accepting his own condemnation of not knowing.)

So I finally found a solution for my studio / office that seems to work for me. The first challenge I was trying to address was how the modular and my laptop for work can share the same space, particularly the speakers. Secondly, I don’t want to use the modular sitting down (especially as I am doing plenty of that in the working day).

My solution was to find a bar table just the right size for the doepfer cases + an iPad for me to stand at and use the modular. I’m really happy with this table, and the set up restricts further expansion.

I managed to have the computer and modular positioned opposite each other, which means the speaker position works well for both (albeit I’d like to add some speaker stands to raise the speakers for my standing wiggling position). This has involved using long cables from the modular to my small mixer, but so far no noise issues.

Very happy with the set up.

Is the iPad in the modular case somewhere? I think I might see it in the lower right…

Ah, no iPad on show, just the space available for it to the left of the case.

Norns and Fates sync’d via Ableton Link.

Amazing! How do they sync with link? (Noob here)

No worries, I am happy to explain!

Norns and Fates are both WiFi enabled, and I have them both connected to my home WiFi network. My laptop is also connected to that network and is running Bitwig, which features Ableton Link as a sync option. I have enabled Link in Bitwig, and Bitwig is generating the master clock signal. As a side note, the Elektron Digitone is slaved to that clock via USB & it’s own Overbridge 2 driver/plugin - which is finally out of beta now!

As of the latest Norns system update yesterday, a few Norns scripts are global clock enabled. I thought to try the Awake and Cheat Codes scripts… yet others are also global clock enabled by now. I loaded up those scripts and changed the sync setting to Link on Norns and Fates.

So Norns and Fates are each synced to Bitwig’s clock via WiFi and Ableton Link technology… the very same way that other Link enabled applications are able to sync, such as many phone music apps. You simply need to have everything connected to your WiFi network and enable Link in the settings… and there is not much more to it than that.

It’s really incredible technology that has opened up many doors for extreme flexibility, immensely simplified the hardware setup and bypassed some of the common ground loop noise issues.

Thank you for your time  what a world we live in!

How stable is the clock using Link? Especially with that Elektron box in the game?

This has been my setup for the past six or so months, originally everything was on the desk. My plan is to try to find a way to have the pedals a bit higher so that I could manipulate them by hand, especially when using them as external effects, also want to get a new interface with more outputs to be able to do that. Really need to find a way to keep my cables from being all over the place. I dream of the day when cables will be obsolete.

I don’t have my own place at the moment as studies abroad came to an abrupt halt (thankfully everyone around me is safe and healthy!)

But noise-making prevails! This is the current pop-up studio which lives under the bed when not in use.

I have a preposterously small wooden desk built into the wall in my small, windowless ‘study’. I just tried shifting the eurorack from its previous position (on a trolley) to a mount on this reconfigurable IKEA organiser. I’m very pleased with the saved space, although it’s a bit wobbly and, if I’m unlucky, will bring the entire panel down - onto two expensive devices - 'ere long.

I’ve tried to take the limited space here as an opportunity for creativity, and mostly it’s been time not space that gets in the way of having fun here. But occasionally it frustrates something proper.

I can see what you mean - I hope you’re able to make that sturdier in time, because it really does look like a fun collection of gear to have all together!

May I ask what eurorack case you’re using? I’ve been thinking of getting something 4U in that kind of skiff format and can’t find much.

It looks like the Intellijel 4U case. I know because I actually just replaced it with a 7U. If you’re interested, shoot me a PM and I could show you what I have.

I think I’ll give it some direct support from below to seal the deal. Just need to find something appropriately sized!

It is indeed a 4U Intellijel. I was previously using the 7U version (also excellent) and decided to scale down.

Finally got around adding a shelf to my desk (thanks to my father’s kind help!). It now starts to feel like something more proper, even if I’m still not really happy with some things. Norns is definitely not in a good position right now and of course the second case needs to be filled with some more modules.
