Here’s one of the original radiator covers, from when our house was built back in '42. The covered top opens to reveal a small reservoir which one can fill with water in order to provide some humidity.

You might not want to wrap a blanket around it, but I think it’s okay to set stuff on them, as one would a shelf, judging by the design of the cover.

(sorry for OT)

Yes! Unluckily the response of the comp heavily depends on your overall system, it’s very sensitive to different input and output impedance, mostly in the characteristics of the output amplifier.
Yep, with that particular unit it has been a real nightmare to model all the non-itinerarities and feedback loops, it took much more than we planned for
I totally agree with you and Wade, it’s my favorite too!

Maybe we should have a separate thread about heating systems?

It’s not 1942 anymore! In 1942 efficiency wasn’t any issue. You’d just pump in more gas, oil or coals.
We live in a different era now. And there are different types of radiators. Radiators heat the room through a mixture of IR radiation and warming the air that flows through the radiator. Some radiators are more designed to provide more IR and some to warm the air. In a good heating system this is all carefully tuned to the room and the temperature and source of the heat.
Putting something over or on top of your radiator will definitely decrease the efficiency of your heating system.

Okay, I guess go ahead and start a heating system thread then? It wasn’t really my intent, to be honest. It took me about 6 months to get my desk and corner to the point where I felt I could post it in this thread to start with, so, no, I wasn’t looking to talk heat. Feel fee to go do that though, meanwhile I’ll keep setting shit on top of my radiators. Like, do it or don’t I guess?

Sorry about that.

Sorry no intend to be rude or stop you from putting stuff on your radiator. It was my assumption that we were discussing building a box or putting a shelf on top of radiators. But since you you already have a cover for your radiator since 1942 this doesn’t apply for your situation. I also just realized that there are (cultural) differences in heating systems between countries.

I rearranged my studio recently. Moved into a new place this past April and I’ve been trying different arrangements the whole time. This one finally feels right to me!

As a side note–does anybody have recommendations for comfortable, rotating or swivelling stools in the <$300 range? I’m borrowing this one right now and I love how easy it is to pivot around to my instruments but it is really uncomfortable when I’m just using my computer or working on a long mix session instead of actually playing things.

What about a drum thone? The brand Roc-n-Soc makes absolutely amazing and comfortable thrones. I’ve had the same one for 10 years now and its still incredible.

I would love to follow a discussion surrounding heating systems, so appreciate such clear thoughts on design. I would be utterly unwilling to use an alternative to woodburning stove but would love develop a system incorporating underfloor, water and moisture levels, foundry and forge work etc.

Super relevant thread as I will likely be transitioning my commercial studio space to something as of yet unknown and will be setting up a small rolling creative table in our apartment. Lots of great ideas and inspiration here! There’s still a lot to go thru.

Here’s what I’m working with at the moment, it seems I can’t stop rearranging this setup every 2 days, which is seriously harming my progress, it’s difficult to improve at something when this thing changes all the time.

Anyway, I am now looking for a stand such as this one in order to finally setup my display instead of the tiny screen on my laptop:

That’s cool. I slept in the weeds out front of a hospital once. It was fiikafjing cold.

Sorry, to be so bristly. In my culture all this talk about my radiator reads as passive aggressive, elitist trolling. What do I know, I used to be homeless. I know quite a lot, come to think of it. I know I made it clear I didn’t post to talk heat, so please.

I built one of those out of IKEA parts. 4 of these: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/capita-leg-stainless-steel-60263574/ and a Lack wall shelf: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/lack-wall-shelf-white-90282180/ . All in less than $40 and it’s nice and sturdy. Have a 32" monitor + speakers on it.

not to drive this into ground, but i think the heater conversation is really more a testament to the well rounded interests of this board. i totally understand how much courage it takes to post a pic of your studio, it took me a long time. but what i really like about seeing people’s studios is the little pieces that make them unique. we have all seen tons of gear photos at this point, i like it when there is a little bit of the person in them too and often i’m drawn to that and don’t really look at the gear. but i also work on houses for a living in various capacities so things like the different room light switches in australia geek me out. everybody’s Arbhar looks the same. :stuck_out_tongue:

I hope so. If that’s the case then apologies to anyone whose coattails I may have ruffled. I struggle a lot with paranoia. Thanks for being cool about it.

@LLK @Martebar thanks! Gonna check it out in a min just curious

Will play quick. Not nearly as impressive as many of the others I have seen here:

Pre COVID I spent four hours a day commuting via subway and train, so really the only way to get anything done was on an iPad. Been using it for music stuff since 2011 (on an Air 3 now, have been through a few over these years). Maybe someday will have a nice little spot set up

Am I being accused of passive aggressive elitist trolling? I hadn’t detected these bristles until this latest reply. I was expressing genuine enthusiasm for starting a heating thread and reading about peoples various takes and systems, particularly diy and off-grid technologies. I meant to reply to shiftr’s suggestion rather than your response so for that confusion I apologise. I have no idea of your cultural or personal background but we actually share having slept outside a church in the cold and living without a home. These periods of homelessness and being cold have inspired my interest in wellbeing technologies and I was enthusiastic about sharing experiences with the fine folk here.
