they are essential to my process now. Swoop, Sprott and Fourses are incredible sound modifiers and generators.
I like chaotic systems originally for granular concerns but now to add complexity to drone situations or pseudo-randomness

I do like Rainmaker. Very flexible middle or end of path mods. I have another mockup of the possible 6U with a 4ms DLD. About half the space requirement of RM and satisfies my loop/delay needs.

If I do make this move, the plugins, etc I have on the laptop and IPad should reinforce anything missing from the modular.

Come to think of it, delay/loop could be offloaded to laptop/iPad as well…

I’ve done a similar thing, where synth functions are all contained in the synth (generally set up to be enough for at least four voices in any setup), and effects are all on a pedalboard run off a mixer. But then, it runs into the problem of not being as compact as I could get it. The laptop is a good way to condense that.

What would you do with all the Verbos gear? I didn’t fail to notice you’ve got a Bark Filter in there–it’s not even available yet.

I like the way you have attenuverters liberally deployed throughout; I didn’t know about that compact SSF passive attenuator. Pretty cool little module.

To determine what can be removed from a system, I usually break my system down into core components and audio / control paths-- put each module into a group based on that module’s primary purpose or the primary way you use it, then think about the different routings each group can have between each other. I typically break categories into audio sources, cv sources, audio manipulation (filters, effects), and utilities (cv manipulation, vca).

Generally speaking, my best rigs were when I had a very few number of audio sources (3 max in 2x104hp) and a higher number of cv sources. Utilities should be balanced across both of those-- e.g., you probably want at least 1 vca per voice in your system, and more vcas (audio or CV) wherever you want to add dynamics. Fill in the rest with effects, if that’s your thing.

I also put a high priority on workflow, which usually means having a greater number of utility modules.

i think the guys really nailed the layout for isms, not having to worry about utilities removes the weird feeling of regret you have by putting them in your rack. that said, even this system is a bit bloated at times, but it has potential to create a wide variety of sounds.

@shreeswifty - Yes, nanorand might be a good addition. Or a Disting… I didn’t take to that one, but most seem to like it.

Yeah, I don’t know. I’d like to downsize, but I really do enjoy and use the modules I have. Has taken me awhile to get to this particular setup.

Yes, the isms case is very well thought out. I was sad to read they probably will only make a small version of it again. 120hp is really a perfect size. Remarkable what the extra 16hp can do.

I think I would second your reduction of the Rainmaker to the DLD; especially as you have iOS integration and can get some really, really nuts stuff out of what’s available in that direction. That would let you keep Braids, or go with Batumi an some of your attenuation/mixing that’s unavailable in the 6U rack you showed.

As for me, I recently downsized as well (though not in and much of a significant manner!) from 180hp to 120hp (6U to 3U). My former rack:

Going with the momome stuff outside the rack is what spurred most of that, so that significantly frees up the ability to go small. Plus, I had a gig two weeks ago where I just showed up, pulled my case out, plugged in my mixer and was ready to go. That, for me, was the main reason of going smaller.

Lots of tantalizing bits there (and many I’m not familiar with) but immediately I’d inventory everything you want to modulate and ask if you have enough attenuators.

EDIT: I guess the Sputnik could be used to attenuate in a pinch?

If you’re like me, you may also miss pure sines for modulation. In which case maybe try and squeeze in the batumi? (And if you don’t and decide to sell, I may be interested :wink:)

@geh2oman - Thanks for the prompt for me to include attenuvertors, etc. They do make a difference.

I really liked your old setup. Lot son functionality there. But, yes, the monome gear can remove the need for quite a number of types of modules. I did notice you currently have only one sound source - Rings. You find that is enough? Or are you craftily using some of your other modules as sound sources as well?

@ppqq - Right, I really don’t want to give up the Batumi. So useful in so many ways. I hear your nudge toward attenuation need…

Well, I’m running the Sheep firmware on Tides (which I’m contemplating switching to the parasite) and Warps has its built-in oscillator. I also run Three Sisters pretty frequently as an oscillator and occasionally have Clouds in the Resonestor mode, so I feel pretty set actually! I just like having versatility. Especially between Tides and Three Sisters, those two give me so many options. I realize that’s not everybody’s bag though.

On the attenuation front, could be worth finding space for a Blinds or Samara, especially mixing signals from Batumi and/or Just Friends that could give you a little more minute control than Cold Mac.

Looks like a great plan.
But I say keep the rainmaker. It does a hell of a lot more than the DLD… or any other delay module for that matter.
In addition to delay and looping to u can use it to build chords by tuning and stacking delay taps or for resonator functions with the comb filter. I know I’ve barely scratched the surface of what it can do and I use it constantly
