I uninstalled and reinstalled midigrid and it’s working now!! I think I just needed to reset everything a little bit … thank you so much!

toga is great for those of us without a real grid. But I couldn’t get it to work with awake, because awake requires the grid to be vertical. So I added a button to toga to allow you to change its orientation. Here it is in a vertical orientation running awake:

Before I submit this to @wangpy as a pull request, you might like to try it out. It’s available from
https://github.com/niksilver/toga/tree/orientation
The binary can also be downloaded directly from GitHub.

If you do try this, you’ll need to touch the connection button after changing the orientation.

And if I missed something in toga or elsewhere that means this wasn’t necessary, that would be good to know. I don’t want to be adding code unnecessarily.

Awake doesn’t require the grid to be vertical - mine isn’t using Awake and Toga. If you extend Awake to 16 steps then you’ll want it horizontal.

@JaxD, I am running into some of the same issues with toga and MLR you report to have resolved, but like hellzapop below, I am not quite sure where to find the code/GitHub link you reference in your post. Do you happen to still have that available?

In the meantime, I tried my best to resolve the issue myself based on your comments re: LED brightness levels and the issues they seem to cause in toga. I am definitely NOT a programmer, but after some research (googling), what I tried was to locate all instances of g:led() and screen.level() that included the number 15 (which I believe to correspond to max grid button brightness) and reduced that number to one slightly lower (I tried 13 and 12).

This actually got my partway there, i.e., I could kinda/sorta get gesture recording to work whereas it wouldn’t previously. However, it’s still not working quite as Peter Bark shows in his excellent tutorial (My Favorite Norns Scripts Episode 5: MLR - YouTube) and I feel it must be due to my kludge of a “fix” (see “I’m not a programmer” disclaimer noted previously).

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for getting me this far in a (hopeful) fix, but was wondering if you (or anyone else) has managed to get this working better than I am able.

Hi! I’m really new to the monome ecosystem so sorry if my problem is only caused by my stupidity. I’ve got a monome Norns shield and touchosc, I’ve installed toga and everything works quite well but when I’m using granchild I’ve got a bit of a problem, I can start the recording but I cannot stop it! I have to use the shield, the iPad seams not to catch the “stop recording” function. Any ideas on I can make it work? Thank you!

I’ve found the same problem with being able to start recording but not stop in mlre (not mlr). Thanks to @JaxD identifying the reason above (it’s because a fully-lit LED won’t send a value of 1.0) I think I’ve found a fix - although I’ve only tested it for about 5 minutes.

In line 200 of lib/togagrid.lua change the value of 15.0 to 15.1 so that the line becomes this:

      osc.send(dest, addr, {z / 15.1})

This makes theLEDs fractionally less bright, and so they’re never instructed to reach their maximum of 1.0. Therefore a touch of the button will be able to send a “new” value of 1.0.

If you do make that code change you’ll need to restart your norns (at least, that’s what I’ve found).

Maybe this will also fix @nimk94’s issue with granchild, but I’ve not tried that.

This doesn’t fix the other problem that @JaxD also mentioned, which is that mlr tries to light an LED off the grid. This generates an error in toga. However, I’m guessing that’s an mlr bug, not a toga bug. And at least we’ve got mlre to play with.

I hope this change does actually work for people.

Wow, thank you so much for finding this fix! I am currently without a usable tablet, but I just put TouchOSC on my phone (Android), made your edit to togagrid.lua, and loaded up mlr (not mlre). Although I haven’t done a thorough test (only had a chance to play with it for a few minutes), everything that was not working for me previously now is!

Hi, new to norns. I have gotten touchosc on my ipad to work with norns in general following the tutorial here.
But I have not gotten toga to work. I’m just trying to get it to work with awake.

Like a poster upthread, when I tap the green button at the top right, it does not stay lit.
But I should not have to tap it according to the docs because I have hardcoded the IP and port of the touchosc client.

It looks like communication is not working either way. When I press grid buttons nothing changes in awake.

awake loads ok and it appears to be ok with the changes I made to the script - no error messages in maiden-repl. But no connectivity. I’m pretty sure I set up touchosc correctly.

Also, I actually have a hardware grid (mostly interested in toga for the arc). When I start awake with the grid plugged in, it works normally, which suggests awake is still connecting to the hardware grid and somehow the added line of code did not take effect. I added a debug line that confirms that the grid library file exists.

I even changed the name of the grid variable to something else so there is no way we are using the predefined grid code:

…but I still get the same results.

I tried compass as well no luck there either. Any suggestions for getting this working?

Thanks for confirming @okyeron. I got toga connected by running the setup manually rather than editing a script code file, but using another name for the import than grid. I see that something similar is being reported and discussed above, will proceed to reading it and sorting this out…

An idea I have: Pd patch to do the work TouchOSC is doing.

Edit: wups reading source code I’m getting the idea that toga is not device emulation for a grid device (was expecting to see it in SYSTEM > DEVICES > GRID) on norns, but monkey-patches the core grid library itself.

Hey, looking for some help on this if anyone has the time. I’m attempting to get toga running on my ipad to pair with the amenbreak script. I’m completely lost on where to edit the code. I added in the line: local grid = util.file_exists(_path.code…“toga”) and include “toga/lib/togagrid” or grid to line 11 of amenbreaks ggrid.lua library and I added in local grid = util.file_exists(_path.code…“toga”) and include “toga/lib/togagrid” or grid to line 13 of midigrid.lua. I also uncommented line 2 of the togagrid.lua script and im pretty lost on where to go from here. I press the green button in the corner with amenbreak loaded on norns and nothing happens. I can press grids and they respond/light up, but no communication with norns.

First: are you sure touchOSC is configured correctly? Can you run grid on other scripts?

Second: I haven’t got my fates/maiden near and I’m no expert on code, but from my previous experiences with other scripts the only script you have to comment should be amenbreak.lua, so try to restore the other scripts you edited back to the original form

You should paste

local grid = util.file_exists(_path.code.."toga") and include "toga/lib/togagrid" or grid

Above

local g = grid.connect ( )

(Or local g instead of grid, be sure the syntax matches)

If there’s no line referring to grid in the main script, try to paste the togagrid line above the script, just after the instructions. I think I did that with orgn script and made it work for me.

wiped all the scripts from my norns, redownloaded amenbreak + toga, tested on cheatcodes2 (worked instantly), then edited the code on amenbreak where you suggested, and it connected first try.

In case anyone is trying to do this in the future I dropped

I found that this fix also works with ndls, and so now I can toggle the REC keys properly for that script. Thanks!

Looking for some guidance here. I probably have waded in too deep trying to take on norns at my age without any coding background, but I am dying to give a few of the scripts (primarily arcologies) a go and I have no desire to add another device like grid or arc to my desk. So I am seeing if I can get to where I am wanting with Toga + TouchOSC + iPad + norns. Here are some questions I have for any Toga users that have already crossed this bridge:

Which scripts in arcologies require editing? Is it just the _grids and _arc files? And where in those scripts should the text listed above be inserted?
Is there any other modifications to the code that is required to get arcologies working smoothly with TouchOSC on the iPad?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I just installed arcologies and I think you’re right, you just have to edit the lib/_grid.lua and lib/_arc.lua as described in the toga docs. Specifically before the connect calls in the code.

So for _grid.lua:

local grid = util.file_exists(_path.code.."toga") and include "toga/lib/togagrid" or grid
g = grid.connect()

and for _arc.lua:

local arc = util.file_exists(_path.code.."toga") and include "toga/lib/togaarc" or arc
a = arc.connect()

After I did this, saved, and ran Arcologies I could see the arc controllers dancing. I’m not sure what to do with Arcologies, but I’ll see if I can get it to make sound now. Hope this helps.

Hello, Great Script! New to Norns - just picked it up recently. Been having all kinds of fun with it.

I have managed to get the toga script working for almost all that scripts i have tried but only the grid script seems to be working with the touchOSC 2. I pasted the script lines as mentioned, but the norns keeps popping up an error everytime the arc script is added. It works perfectly fine when just the grid script has been applied.

This is how I have pasted the script

local grid = util.file_exists(_path.code…“toga”) and include “toga/lib/togagrid” or grid
local arc = util.file_exists(_path.code…“toga”) and include “toga/lib/togaarc” or arc
g = grid.connect()
a = arc.connect()

I have tried variations as well

Also, tried suggestions from this post and got into the _arc.lua in the lib file and tried there too.

But unfortunately, nothing seems to work. Getting the arc to work has been impossible, but it seems like most of you have managed this on this thread.

Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong? any help is highly apprieciated.

Toga has been amazing! Grandchild, Ndls, Orgn has been working great and ive been having so much fun with it. Such a great world to dive into and SUCH a strong tight knit community. definitely late to the party ( super late ) but Im glad to have finally found this world.
