Cheat codes has its own TouchOSC template and implementation - so you would NOT use oscgrid with CC at all.

CC OSC stuff should “just work”.

Double check the cheat codes documentation for setup/config?

Thank you for replying so swiftly! This was my thinking too. There is no connectivity at all between CC and OSC, they’re on the same wifi but OSC is not showing norns as a host. It’s bizarre.

I keep referring back to the cheat codes +OSC supplement PDF but can’t get past instruction 3 (select norns as a host) as it’s simply not an option.

Very frustrating… can’t help but think I must have missed something…

Maybe @dan_derks has answers for using the android version of TouchOSC with CC?

While I don’t have an answer… I can say, don’t feel bad that you can’t figure it out yet. A lot of forehead smack moments with some of this stuff

Haha, thank you. There’s been a lot of that today. It feels like I’m at the bottom of a very tall mountain but I’m determined to succeed!

Good luck - I didn’t have much luck yet with TouchOSC on Android as yet, though I did get it working with Cheat Codes, albeit very slowly.

hi sophie! sorry to hear about the trouble

this doesn’t sound like a CC-specific issue, as not being able to connect to norns as a host doesn’t depend on any script functionality.

to confirm:

  • what IP address is your norns displaying?
  • could you share a screenshot of your OSC settings from TouchOSC?
  • are you able to use this non-script-specific OSC template to control levels on norns? https://github.com/felart/Norns-TouchOSC

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the quick reply!

The IP address on the norns was showing 192.168 until I changed it to match the Local IP Address showing in Touch OSC 192.0.0.4.

I opened the template in TouchOSC but couldn’t control the levels on norns.

It’s likely you need to enter the norns IP address manually for the Host field in TouchOSC.

(although it seems a bit odd that you’d have two devices on the same wifi network with 192.168.x.x and 192.0.0.x addresses)

ah! this is the IP listed in the cheat codes script, but that’s just a placeholder. let’s ignore cheat codes for now and work on getting any TouchOSC connectivity going.

the IP address on your norns is listed in the CONNECT menu:

and through K2 on the SELECT/SYSTEM/SLEEP menu:

yours will be something more robust than 192.168 – please confirm?

We’re working! Woo!

Initially I was at my studio tethering from my phone. Then I tried hotspot. NOPE!

Now I’m home I tried again on the wifi, changed the host name to the IP shown on norns as you suggested. Tried the template to control levels and it worked!

Over to Cheat Codes and we’re winning! Thanks so much for your help. What a super community. Can’t wait to dig deeper on this.

A post was merged into an existing topic: [cheat codes]: v1.3.1 (May 4, 2020)

Sorry to bump up a dormant post without having much to add, I was just wondering if anyone else had uploaded video of their TouchOSC/Norns setup anywhere. I don’t really have the time to dedicate to my Norns Shield yet but am fascinated by it and the possibilities it affords and seeing videos of others’ setups would be very intriguing/inspiring.

@okyeron you work in this is fantastic and your Instagram feed is a constant source of encouragement. I echo @sophie regarding feeling as though I’m at the bottom of a very large mountain (but I am hoping that I can compensate with determination what I may lack in proficiency  )

Determination coupled with the advice and resources people here have provided have worked for me so far! I’ve found norns and many of the scripts very deep and immersive. Even with my next-to-nothing knowledge of coding and initially working without a grid I’ve been able to get some wonderful musical conversations going between me and norns. When I hit a block I try to remind myself that the main focus of the platform is to make music and I take a step back.

I was using TouchOSC on my phone with Cheat Codes 1. As my phone is my only source of taking video footage I can’t offer to do that. I’m happy to try to answer any questions you have!

in case it helps, anything that’s in a script’s parameters list can be addressed via osc in lieu of midi mapping. the troubles folks most often ran into with osc and cheat codes 1 was getting the bi-directional communication set up, which is specific to the script. 99% of cases will only require one way communication from touchosc to norns, which is detailed here: https://monome.org/docs/norns/control-clock/#osc. there’s also a nice example template for controlling the system params at the bottom of that section.

it’s actually pretty fun to make your own osc layouts for scripts once you grok the osc addresses — a small bit of customization to match your performance needs

if you have any additional questions, please let us know! if you’re willing to do a recorded zoom call, i can also walk you through how to set up osc control and we can share that with others :sparkles:

I love this! I think that’s the perfect approach - and it’s something I’ll try to bear in mind to guide my explorations!

Thank you - that’s great information to have. The idea of essentially making my own performance controller is immensely appealing - particularly as I’m used to that with Ableton and using MIDI learn to map functions to controllers.

I’m absolutely prepared to do that! That’s a most generous offer!

i’ve been trying to get my norns shield to connect with touchosc, specifically to cheat codes and am having no luck connecting. i’ve tried following all of the steps in the osc supplement pdf and am not sure what exactly i’m doing wrong. in the touchosc connections section, i changed both the host in osc and network host in touchosc bridge to the same IP that my norns is connected to. i also turned on bundle messages and send ping in the options section. still no luck… any idea as to what the issue could be?

touchosc bridge (the application or settings) should not be involved at all.

You should just set the addresses in the touchOSC app and that’s all you need.

Maybe post a photo of your TouchOSC settings page (the OSC settings under Connections)

figured it out, after going to disable the bridge i realized this whole time my phone was running off of the 5g signal and not actually connected to my wifi, once connected to wifi the norns instantly synched with touchosc. beginner moment…
