I can’t see it at all!

this is a discourse change in the latest version – upstream removed the global “suppress from latest” feature in favor of users being able to mute it in their personal Latest views. (profile > preferences > categories > muted categories)

workarounds:

  • temporarily unmute Trade to make the category visible for browsing
  • visit your profile and click your previous Trade replies/notifications
  • bookmark the category permalink

unfortunately, the new functionality isn’t a replacement for the old. muting the category not only removes it from your Latest view, but also removes it entirely from the list of available categories. user access to Trade hasn’t changed; it’s just upstream’s new mute behavior that hides the category’s existence. the discourse upgrade should have automatically migrated everyone to the new mute settings, but there’s no way to guarantee it. it’s now up to users to set their own view preferences.

there is quite a bit of pushback on this change on discourse upstream’s forum. there are many forum admins who have the same use cases as lines, and they all want the old “suppress” behavior back. i’ve been watching the bugs and commits leading up to this feature’s current form, and there’s now some talk about making the new category mutes more granular. but it remains to be seen if upstream will actually listen to all the requests to revert or modify the change.

as always, i’m keeping an eye on the issue. if upstream doesn’t make the change on their end, maybe a third party will write a plugin that i can pull into our discourse install. i prefer the old behavior, instead of the new all-or-nothing visibility.

As a workaround to keep it off the Latest feed, you can keep it muted from Latest and visit https://llllllll.co/c/trade to open the category manually.

Is the trade section now completely gone? I‘m sure it’s just me, but I can’t see it anymore under categories. I didn’t change any settings, and actually liked having it back in the main feed.

Uh it seems gone to me, too
Direct link still works https://llllllll.co/c/trade
I should mention I’m on mobile

Nope, I can still see trade posts, and the category listed in the dropdown.

I’m on mobile, too. Actually always am when on here

I can’t see it either. If I search for trade I can find it and navigate it normally, but it’s not showing up in the categories list.

Edit: I’m on a mobile too.

On mobile:

  • tap your profile picture
  • tap your username
  • tap Preferences
  • in the right-hand drop-down (with Account selected by default) select Categories
  • under Muted you should see Trade, click the X to remove the category from muted.

This will cause trade posts to appear in your front page / latest feed and will cause the category to show up when browsing categories. These are now linked together because of the feature change mentioned above. If you don’t want trade posts on your front page, for now you have to keep this category muted and use the direct link.

Worked. Thanks a lot!

updates:

i installed and activated a discourse plugin that restores the preferred old behavior & functionality.

if it wasn’t already done for them, users can now individually un-mute the Trade category (preferences > categories). Trade activity is now cleared from the /latest view, but the category itself is once again navigable. it can be accessed by clicking the hamburger nav dropdown, just like all the other listed categories.

previously, the default “mute” setting forced by discourse upstream deleted the category from everyone’s view, including from the list of available categories. the new plugin fixes this: Trade posts are once again hidden from the front page by default, but the category itself is always listed and accessible via the dropdown, unless users have added it to their personal list of muted categories. the forum is now working as intended/expected.

thanks for your patience, folks!

If of common interest, would it be possible to make a rule deleting sold item from the body of the post?
It would make the search much more streamlined and efficient.

Thanks for this note, I had thought perhaps the trade category was deleted because I just didn’t see it anymore.

I actually wish people didn’t delete sold items completely or replace the price with “sold” so often.

Checking what the fair price for a module is (especially when it actually sold) is a useful thing when you want to sell something and are not checking for sale forums every day…

I understand where you are coming from. There however are quite a few other resources online available for that.I personally use modulargrid and Reverb to asses what is a fair price to pay something I want to buy.

updates:

the FAQ/rules have been updated with a section on Trade & Commerce. this T&C section outlines some of the specific Trade bits that extend outside the category and apply to the whole forum. these things are now visible outside the Trade category. as emphasized in our Trade rules, lines’ purpose is not commerce, so we now state that up-front in our public FAQ/rules.

this section also addresses some problematic recurring behaviors, and issues that have been increasing in recent times. we want to make it clear to current and future members what our stance is on these activities.

I guess this question would go here: when I am on my mobile and browsing using Safari, I do not see “Trade” as a category from the dropdown. Here on a desktop I can see it fine, but for some reason not in Safari. (Tested on two phones.)

I can see all the other categories, even the private like “Regulars”. But no trade! Any thoughts on this?

read a few posts up: go into your preferences and remove Trade from your muted categories. preferences > categories.

Ah sorry, I scrolled up but should have scrolled a little further. Thanks!

Totally understand the reasoning behind keeping the trade category muted/separate, but is anyone else seeing posts in the Trade category included in the number of “new” topics at the bottom of the screen, but excluded at https://llllllll.co/new (where the “__ new” link points)?
