this is a discourse change in the latest version – upstream removed the global “suppress from latest” feature in favor of users being able to mute it in their personal Latest views. (profile > preferences > categories > muted categories)
workarounds:
- temporarily unmute Trade to make the category visible for browsing
- visit your profile and click your previous Trade replies/notifications
- bookmark the category permalink
unfortunately, the new functionality isn’t a replacement for the old. muting the category not only removes it from your Latest view, but also removes it entirely from the list of available categories. user access to Trade hasn’t changed; it’s just upstream’s new mute behavior that hides the category’s existence. the discourse upgrade should have automatically migrated everyone to the new mute settings, but there’s no way to guarantee it. it’s now up to users to set their own view preferences.
there is quite a bit of pushback on this change on discourse upstream’s forum. there are many forum admins who have the same use cases as lines, and they all want the old “suppress” behavior back. i’ve been watching the bugs and commits leading up to this feature’s current form, and there’s now some talk about making the new category mutes more granular. but it remains to be seen if upstream will actually listen to all the requests to revert or modify the change.
as always, i’m keeping an eye on the issue. if upstream doesn’t make the change on their end, maybe a third party will write a plugin that i can pull into our discourse install. i prefer the old behavior, instead of the new all-or-nothing visibility.
