Innofaders measure capacitance, rather than resistance - they’re not potentiometers. They possibly do have some digital componentry, but they’re somewhat different to the way traditional faders work so harder to compare. (The advantage is: fluff and dirty and grime doesn’t really impact their performance). I wouldn’t be surprised if there was something going on in there to make them effectively work like a pot (ie, spitting out 0-Xvolts).

I’ve DIY’d some of my own controllers using faders, and they’re entirely fine for DIY - you’d want linear, not log, and you can get centre-indented ones if you’d particularly like something to behave like a crossfader. My only concern would be robustness - like, the reason crossfader units are replaceable is because they can take a punishing from scratch techniques, so cheaper faders might not survive so long. But a simple pot + microcontroller would get you MIDI or serial data out of one, for sure. There might be recommendations on suitably heavy-duty part numbers out there.

There’s a guy who’s made a DIY board for the Innofader (so you can use it as a VCA style fader), and he’s responded to a thread I posted on digitalvertigo forum asking about this sort of thing.

He suggested this fader as basically being a passive Innofader, so once I buddy up with someone to make the minimum for free shipping I’ll order like 5 of them to play around with. They pretty cheap so even if they get chewed up I can easily/cheaply replace them.

For now I’m thinking of making a standalone controller in a Raiden sized enclosure that does 14bit MIDI with one of those faders, and then building one into my PT-01 as well.

Actually thinking about building a bunch of shit into the PT-01 now. Obviously regular mods and stuff, but maybe a bunch of weirder shit, like a built in spring reverb, a mixer, some contact mics (hardwired to the mixer), etc… Mmmmm

I’m also looking into how to make a diy crossfader to add to a turntable. I think the easiest way is the scratch modded linear pot. Keep me posted on your progress!

Ordering 5 of them this week to have a play around with. If the physical side of it isn’t too complicated, software wise it should be trivial.

But yeah, I’ll post my details as I discover them.

This book looks super interesting:

But it was only published as an edition of 100… bummer.

I’ve used the contact form on her webpage to see if it’s possible to just buy a pdf of it or something as I’m mainly interested in the essays/info, and don’t care about a signed ‘art object’ book.

(as a side note been having a blast with my pt01 learning a bunch of faderless scratching techniques, though I have ordered Jesse Dean fader which should be arriving soon)

I feel like I reached out about finding a copy of this as well and I don’t think I heard back.

Gotta be a few out there somewhere tho…

It smells like the kind of thing that is more ‘art object’ than book (edition of 100, signed, etc…), which is a shame as it seems like it would be a great book too.

I guess if anyone knows anyone who has one, let us know!

Since I don’t have a fader yet I’ve been looking at Q-bert’s crazy faderless scratching videos.

Of all the people I’ve seen his RH looks the most ‘instrumental’, and at times like a physical extension of the record itself.

I love this thread. Yes @Rodrigo, faderless scratching is interesting and extremely fun. It’s also a great way to practice building up your wrist and fingers (record control). Also, you can use your other hand as the fader by tapping, simulating a cutoff sound. Scratching is my stress relief exercise .

(heard back from Maria Chavez and she says there should be another (final) printing of her book this winter, so I’ve signed up to the mailing list to try to nab one when they come up)

please keep us posted on this if you remember! i’m sure i’m not the only lines member who would contribute to an order.

Will do, just hoping it’s not crazy expensive though!

awesome! I think I pinged her via twitter, so maybe why I never heard back.

Also people get busy etc so it’s easy to get lost

Will defo snag a copy if they’re affordable!

Yeah I ordered the reissue, which is waiting for me in Madrid when I next return. Looking forward to it!

Interesting. I wonder how it ‘performs’ as compared to the portablism stuff. Could make for a cool kit to build into other enclosures.

Yeah, I like the concept but would be concerned about the cardboard. Audiophiles go to such lengths to get stability out of their turntable. (I think silly lengths, but whatever)

How will they isolate the platter from the build in speakers? I could imagine feedback, vibration, and other stuff reaching the arm…

The PT-01 doesn’t have a problem with feedback, but it has a single rinky speaker.

Personally I would just rehouse the arm/body(/speakers) in something else, but I guess that’s not this demographic/idea.
