One thing about the DPLPG is, there’s a minimum threshold to the CV input where it won’t open up. If you try to open it just a tiny amount, or use a slow attack, it won’t work very well.

Otherwise it’s a great module especially for the price

Have you had a chance to play around with the a-101-2 yet?

Thanks to everyone in here who suggested the RYO Aperture, I just finished building mine and it’s surprisingly versatile. With the LPG and resonance turned up and inputting an envelope for CV in I even got a bass drum-sounding noise.

I was pondering the possibility of LPG emulation in the ER-301. It’s not something I’ve seen people talk about much. I don’t know if that’s because few have tried it, or because the results aren’t satisfactory, or because it’s easy enough not to be noteworthy.

well in fact i also think it might be difficult to translate the magic of vactrols with the 301 units but…you never know! have to try

I only have experience with MI’s Streams, which I have found to be pretty useful. Analog VCAs and filters under digital control with compression, envelope follower, and other treats. VCA closes all the way too. Could be worth a look.

the blue panel was pretty, but i really like the new black & gold look of the redesigned dplpg, which will match my growing set of instruo modules. i ordered the new version direct from @MengQiMusic last week. this is my first lpg module, besides the three built-in to my isms. i’m preparing for another live show, and two lpgs in 2hp is exactly what this small skiff needs; sequencing more oscillators + melodies.

The shipping is crazy expensive, at least to Sweden. I ordered one from him a couple of years ago for way less. The shipping rates bums me out…
I love the DPLPG though so it’s totally worth it.

Ordered a Takaab 2Lpg. 30 bucks! I’ll report back when I get it, but the demos I’ve heard sound great.

q: does every single optomix click? even the revision?

if yes: why is this considered acceptable behavior? do any other lpgs exhibit this behavior? is there something i am missing here?

What do you mean click?

Lpgs tend to not click the way vcas can with very fast triggers as the optical circuits add a tiny bit of slew. If I remember right, you can ping the optomix with no input at all and get tone out and that can a desired thing.

if a wave is fed into the optomix, most of the time using the strike input produces a click on the attack. it sounds like the same click that happens when a wave is cut somewhere in the middle of a cycle. i have tried attenuating the strike input. it is most noticable with sines and other smooth sounds. i love my optomix but i absolutely hate using the strike input because of this. i recently got a dplpg and it is blowing my mind how much more pleasant it sounds when “pinged.”

googling “optomix click” yields lots of discussion on mw about this, and the only resolution ive seen is that it is supposed to be character. ive never seen any discussion of other lpgs exhibiting this behavior

I can only talk to my experience here, because I think all Optomixes are different because of the vactrols?

I had one and sent it back because I could never successfully use the strike input without clicking. I’ve now got the POCA from FSS and the DPLG, both are OK, but to me the decay does not sound as nice (a bit too long) as the Optomix did. But the click at the start made it unusable for me.

The best Lpg that I’ve heard is Natural Gate by Rabid Elephant. It doesn’t have any vactrol but uses a filter plus a vca to try replicating natural timbre. Everything that I listen with this module is great, no bleed and sturdy manufacturing.

My Aperture doesn’t click when using the Klang input. I assume Strike and Klang are similar - trigger in for a simple decay envelope?

Try different envelope shapes? A short slew can go a long way, also attenuated triggers of different levels will give different effects in a low pass gate.

With your optomix, does the damp control make any difference?

I’m not trying to sell anyone on unwanted clicks and pops, I’ve got no skin in the game.

Just tried a bunch of things, all with either gates from Tempi, EOC triggers from Maths, or else envelopes from Maths.

Without audio, we can’t know if we’re all hearing the same things, but: with gates, I get a sharp attack “click” with:

  • Optomix v1
  • LxD, both channels
  • DPO
  • DPLPG

This is more pronounced if I’m feeding it mellow lower frequency content. I tried a sine as you suggested. When it’s lower frequency, I hear the attack more. When the sine is higher frequency, I hear it less. My guess is it blends better with the higher frequency sine. But so with higher frequency sounds, I get the sort of “lovely” ping from all these LPGs, including the DPLPG. With lower frequency sounds, I get the onset “click”, including with the DPLPG.

With my RxMx and a gate triggering the strike, I get a much mellower sound even with the low frequency content. Each input is different, but none of them quite have the harsh onset that I’m hearing with hard square gates on the other LPGs.

If I feed a gentler slope into Strike on any of my LPGs, I get a correspondingly gentle attack. This surprised me, as I thought Strike was a strictly triggered thing with the same response once it got a high enough voltage change. Apparently it can be used somewhat like the CV/Control input though with a different character.

So, yeah, slew a bit as @coreyr suggested? Or accept it as the character of that circuit and work with it. But again, given similar inputs, my DPLPG has the same “issue” as my MN LPGs, so it might come down to the vactrols, etc.

Another thing to try is attenuating the gate into Strike? I’m not inclined to patch up a test right now, though, sorry.

I also realized that, for me, the clicks on my LxD were very much a noticing-that-you’re-breathing thing—if I don’t think about it too much, they just sound percussive.

I just acquired the Verbos Amp & Tone Controller. Highly recommended! I’m also loving this perfectly timed thread.

On the topic of digital emulations of LPGs I am astounded by the one in the Passersby engine for Norns by @markeats, it’s very convincing.
