a simple voltage recall script for norns + crow + grid
collect voltage sets on norns, and send them to crow. inspired by cold macs patch surveillance, and the way that the earthsea trilogy module handles it’s cv outs. though, it isn’t really like either of those things.
Requirements
norns
crow (make sure your crow is updated to 4.0.5 or later)
grid
Documentation
make sure you turn crow clocking off in the norns parameter menu. PARAMETERS/CLOCK/CROW/OUT should be set to off.
you can find the full documentation at the github link below
Just starting to use crow and can’t wait to give this a go!
I can’t wait to add a JF to my little rig - I feel like this sort of thing is perfect for it?!!
Now to find one!
I currently have plaits and w/ as my sound sources…and beads in a way. Hopefully I can get it going
Question: I am getting a constant jump (affected by the slew rate) from 0v-10v on crow channel one. Is that intentional? I didn’t see anything about it in the docs, or a way to turn it on or off. It’s not a part of a pattern (I don’t believe? meta patterns?) and happens immediately upon startup across all voltage sets.
@spacelordmother, hmmmm… i just checked here and i am not seeing that behavior. i don’t think it should matter, but are you running a “standalone” script on crow? could you try clearing your crow and then running vcr?
hey,
this looks brilliant - i have it up and everything is working except for the play/record/stop and clear buttons… these pads work fine with other scripts so not sure what the problem is?
any ideas would be much appreciated!
EDIT
in maiden i get -
recording pattern…
pattern_time: no events recorded
playing pattern…
but the pad never flashes or changes brightness state at all…
arming the recorder doesn’t start recording until an event/press is detected on the voltage set/recall buttons. the r/p/s button only blinks if there has been a pattern recorded.
the state of the r/p/s button reflects the status of the pattern recorder. dimly lit is showing that there’s nothing in the pattern. blinking shows that there’s something in your pattern, and it isn’t currenlty playing. brightly lit shows that you are playing back your pattern.
Thanks!
I was trying to record using the voltage scope - so setting patterns within the voltage sets.
I was wasn’t aware that the patterns or the voltage scope stayed the same and the pattern recorded the voltage sets…long winded, I’m sorry.
Maybe it would be awesome to be able to record various patterns within in the voltage sets as well?!
Had some fun playing with slew rates and setting up a really quick trigger pattern like in your demo vid
Much love and insane work as always

for me it’s at the bottom of the list. if you can see vcr there, delete it and then try re-installing. i’m not sure why it would take longer than usual. i mean, it does pull in some png files for the splash screen and documentation… but this is only like 700 KB
anyway, i would suggest finding vcr in maiden, deleting it, and then re-installing. if it takes a little while, just wait it out if you can.
edit: i can probably cull a few of the frames in the splash to get the size down, i’m going to play around with it later today.
ill give it a go and report back later on this evening
thanks for the suggestions
EDIT//UPDATE: it was found in the code folder as well as the data folder - so I went to see if it appeared in the list of scripts to launch on my norns (it was) so I launched it, grid lit up with the layout , some animation on the screen for a moment and then it popped up with the gui and looks good to go. Ill have to learn more about it before I take it for a test drive though.
So maybe it for some reason unknown to me has that weird hangup where it doesnt tell you that it was successfully installed like matron does for all the other scripts i have installed. I swear I waited like five minutes before I pressed the X.
Any suggestions for someone who might want to modify vcr so it doesn’t rely on grid? Reading the docs and watching the demo with interaction design in mind, maybe the voltages could be dialed in with norns encoders…?
that’s already a thing the thing that grid mostly allows for is the pattern recorder that plays back voltage sets. i’m sure that it’s possible to squeeze more things out of the norns keys/encoders, but it would need some thought.
@xmacex, without a grid it works like this… set/collect the voltages on norns, then send the voltages to crow.
encoders 1-3 set/collect the voltages for outs 1-3 (key 1 + enc 3 sets the 4th).
press key 1 + key 3 to send the voltages to crow.
edit: i see that alt + key 2 isn’t used. maybe it could be used for the pattern recorder?
