Yeah video feedback can be amazing. Here’s another nice video from an artist I know:

@lumena,

i had to create a simple m4l device that is live.dials mapped to specific midi channels and ccs. Then I used rptMidi for a local midi network on the laptop. From there I just map the midi in resolume like normal. The part that I’m really happy about is that I can bring that midi back into Ableton and map it to audio effects. From there I just make a bunch of chains with multiple instances of the m4l device (outputting to different channels or cc’s) and switch around depending on what I want to do.

I went this route because I wanted to tweak parameters using push 2 and clip envelopes so that the audio and effects sync up.

It took me two posts and rereading what you where doing to make me realize that you were on a pc. I am doing research on a Mac and I wondered about the rptMidi. It may take a few days but I will download the resolume demo and see what it takes to do this on the Mac. I really like your concept having the knobs control both sound and visuals. If you have more demos I would gladly watch.

rptMidi is basically a port of the stock apple midi network feature. So just get that going and set your daw to both send and receive midi through the midi network you configure. Resolume should be pretty easy, you just set it’s preferences so that incoming midi is through the configured network.

this link from ableton is a little nicer with screenshots for the apple part

must… not… fall… down… video synth… rabbit h- DANG ALL THAT IS SO COOL!!!

Hey All,

I post most of my video synthesis here:

I use an LZX setup spread over two skiffs for pattern generation and processing of camera and mixer feedback:

Skiff one: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/569057
Skiff two: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/568983

I run dual thunderbolt Blackmagic Intensities so I can loop in and out of my Mac. I use the mighty Signal Culture applications for further hybridization:

Love the work shared in this thread so far, and I’m eager to see more.

Great stuff, Leslie. Thanks for sharing your work!

I’m new to video synthesis, but want to make some multimedia projects to combine sound/music and video. I picked up the new LZX Vidiot to get started. Right now I have a small crt monitor, my main 12U euro for audio, and that’s it. I expect I’ll want to pick up a Blackmagic box for capturing, but not really sure what else I’ll need until I get started. I’m sure I’ll be reaching out for advice as time goes on.

I also bought the Videot and I’ve set up the smallest cheapest TV I could find above my modular system. So far so good, but the two outputs of the videot… it would be nice to combine them into one. What would I need for this?

A mixer, I believe. Could be wrong, though.

a good way to wake up some wonderful music (thank you so much @stripes)
and year old irma footage

Have been digging through the Lumen manual in a bit more detail. Manuals sure do help! Also had a breakthrough with SyphonRecorder (it has preferences! The preferences include recording in 1080p) and found a build of VLC that outputs to Syphon, which makes it much easier to include video footage in Lumen. I was doing a bit of a hack with Processing before, this is much much easier.

To those of you with the vidiot:

Thoughts? Worth the price tag?

Interest in getting one to do some live visual stuff. Very compelled by this video… really keeps itself fresh and doesn’t get too wild with the color schemes.

Definitely worth it. A fun stand alone box that expands well with rest of the lzx line. Being discontinued ( only to further production of new modules) so it’s a good time to grab them before they become collectible. Pairs well with feedback and video inputs.

Dear God no.

But it’s super fun and interesting. Make sure you and yours can eat, stay warm this winter and plan for your collective future. Then consider this absurd, expensive glorious doodad.

Should you buy it instead of a phone that tracks your habits and sells them to the highest bidder? Yes. Definitely. Is it worth the money? No. Never. But what is?

You need to decide the mapping of dollar to value. This thing makes crazy colors… I like it a bunch.

As someone working with several different formats of video synthesis, I’m curious - do you find Lumen’s output to be some what low fidelity? I use Syphon to capture the output, and when I view the result full screen, it always seems a bit pixelated.

Do you find this as well, or do I have my settings misconfigured?

Lumen is definitely lofi. I often use a blur in vdmx to smooth. Hd has been in the work for years. Hopefully it sees the light of day.
