If you’re interested in seeing Tachyons+ Vortex Decoder, it’s featured in most of these videos here: https://www.instagram.com/bereenondo/.

To other Tachyons users, which one would you recommend as a pair for VD? I’ve been thinking of adding another module to get some extra flavour, but I’m looking for a module that wouldn’t overlap too much with the Vortex one.

Ahh, the video assist–didn’t recognize that–have heard they’re super nice, though. I have a similar bunch of converters so I can input or output in multiple formats–was thinking of mounting them all to a board and making some custom cables to keep things neat. I spend hours arranging my studio, but there are cables everywhere–always. Your setup looks fairly neat. Thanks for the kind words on the twitch stream–will be streaming a new show this Friday.

has anyone tried r_e_c_u_r here? I’m interested to know if it can be made to run with the norns shield hardware. Seems like a great budget option since it can run shaders and other tricks.

very nice stuff.
I especially like the one with the 2 hands.
I contacted tachyons but I haven’t heard back yet. I am looking forward to getting one.

RECUR is great fun

I’m making a discord to cover all the raspberry pi based video synths
check out one that I made

and another one I didn’t

I’ve put out an image (link in scrawl readme) that facilitates easy switching between several of these type of apps from one raspberry Pi too

Hi all,
So I have been steadily buying video hardware modules and some of them are actually shipping to me - I am having a bit of a freak out realizing that I don’t have a case or a clue about power supplies. Playing with modular grid has shown me that I probably need more space rather than less. What is my best bet for a case for video? Any help greatly appreciated.

i would suggest getting the Mallekko power.

part of my vid rig lives in a 6u Enclave case that i had to upgrade the power in.

it had an Intellijel which the Vid modules killed.

there is also the LZX Mantis case which i would recommend.
(this has that same Mallekko PSU.)

I impulse bought one of these after seeing that video. Just got it last week and havent had a ton of time to play with it. But…as a total rookie to video synthesis, it is approachable and pretty easy to understand, and super easy to just patch some CV out from your modular into the hypno and see some nice moving lights

I have been looking for a malekko power bus but it seems to be sold out everywhere. I am guessing you mean the LZX Vessel case - its kinda ugly and doesn’t look very portable. I was hoping something with a cover and handle.

yeah…that Mallekko is a bit of hunt to find one.
i had to dig all over to find it!

ah…yes…the Vessel case…i don’t know why i called it Mantis.

best bet then for what you want is to find a case with plenty of depth and hunt down that Mallekko power.

keep in mind that the depth is REALLY important with many of these video modules.

even with the low profile of the Mallekko power i still had to rearrange my Modular Grid layout when it came time to install everything IRL.

One thing I never knew until I did some serious digging online were the cables behind the modules. RCAs right? I still don’t have a video modular but I have a Vidiot. From this thread I’m going to design a good raspberry pi cradle for recurr in a few weeks after my exams.
It was nice seeing you on the synth chats also Spike!

Many (but not all) video synthesis modules need sync signals to synchronize synthesized waveforms with the scanning of the electron beam in an analog display. (LCDs of course do not work this way, but a composite video signal embeds horizontal and vertical sync pulses whose timing defines the screen resolution.) Basically any signal you want to be stationary instead of free-running needs to be synchronized to the same time base as the display. Stuff like oscillators and ramps need a sync input, other more processing-oriented analog modules generally don’t since they just transform an existing signal. On the Vidiot the push buttons toggle synchronization of the vertical and horizontal oscillators, or you can manually sync them with their 3.5mm sync input jacks.

Sync connections in LZX have gone through three different forms:

  • over the CV/gate lines on the Euro power bus
  • over a dedicated 14 pin ribbon cable for sync
  • over an RCA connector carrying “composite sync” which includes both vertical and horizontal sync pulses. This is used by all new modules and is also compatible with a lot of broadcast gear.

More details on specific modules here.

I for a long time did a doepfer case(A-100P6 thats just sitting here and i need to sell) and had absolutely no issues and its plenty deep and now am in a built case with Mallekko boards in it. Also note LZX is working on there own board not yet released.

Excellent information thank you

concerning the cables…
everything i use just powers up with the regular modular ribbon cable.
all of the RCA video connections are on the front.
but i am not using any LZX stuff like @csboling explained above.
so i don’t have any issues with cable connections and any weird sync issues like that.
it’s just the issue of the depth of these vid modules.

you saw the SoCal Synth Forum thing?
oh cool!!!
thanks!!!

Hello,
I posted about this in the new releases + video thread: I made a video for the band Which Wave.

I used LZX’s Vidiot, Doorway and Staircase, with lots of editing and a little tweaking in Premiere.

Thought this thread would enjoy hearing more about the gear, so there it is!

Modulating Lumen via VCV Rack is turning out to be great fun. On a Mac, using IAC Bus plus a CV-CC midi module allows for very creative midi mapping.
