I don’t know that I can tell you about any secret Giovanni albums that Google can’t. Silver Gold, Time Shifter, Hands of Rhythm, etc. are all quite well known. Despite the masterful drumming, this kind of 90’s style contemporary jazz isn’t my favorite. I do quite like the 2020 album Two Become One:
and one of my favorite recordings of him is this duet with his teacher Changuito excerpted from an instructional video
On the topic of “What are you listening to?”, my tastes for Afrocuban music run more toward the traditional religious forms and the rumba complex. All the fusion stuff is fine but the added elements only serve to dilute the power of the drums and voices. Ever since it was released in March I’ve been listening to this album nonstop:
As far as I’m concerned it’s easily the best Afrocuban album ever recorded, at least until they come out with their next one.

Mid 80s minimal synth pop from Germany. Come for the arpeggiated bass synth, stay for the amusingly incongruous drum fills.
Both records are great. I love Super Ape for how stripped down and heavy it sounds, but Return of the Super Ape is on a whole other level, imho. It’s so strange and colorful and contains my all-time favorite Lee Scratch Perry track- Huzza a Hana.

Minamo are among my favorite artists. I’m surprised that they don’t get mentioned more on Lines…
I met them at Berklee a while back, they are lovely people. They put on a great show, as did Moskitoo and Sawako who they were touring with.

I’ve followed Keiichi Sugimoto/Fonica/Fourcolour ever since that great 12k album EADGBE I caught Moskitoo live at a O Nest,Shibuya back in 2007 - laptop, guitar & vocals - sounded great through a decent PA

I don’t listen to that much straight techno, but I love late 90s to early 00s Thomas Brinkmann- especially his Rosa compilation:

Another entire hardcore dance subgenre I basically only listen to by searching “[genre name] mix [current year]”

clicks & cuts changed my life and especially thomas’ way of working, both musically and conceptually, was ultra mind blowing to me as a teenage techno head. ester is a classic and still one of my favourites…

I’ve actually never heard this before. Thanks for sharing!
And yeah, his process is so interesting. It’s a very physical exploration of techno… literally.

I really miss Motion. This album is like a more lowercase version of Oval/Microstoria and the whole sound aesthetics is so lovely.
I tend to turn to it when it all gets too much.

Not sure when it happened, but nearly 20 years after first hearing Autechre and deciding that they were too weird for me, I cannot stop listening to their live sets.
