“It’s 1989, rural Wales, a lonely old farmhouse in the shadow of the imposing Brecon Beacons mountains. Young, pregnant Liz Rich and her artist husband Bill rent an isolated farmhouse in the Welsh countryside, with Bill’s teenage son Laurence. They’re hoping for a fresh start, but the house holds dark secrets, and the family’s new life becomes a terrifying ordeal that will change them forever.”

Writing Daniel Lanois off as being U2 related is to also ignore Dylan, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Neil Young & Brian Eno, among many others. Lanois is fantastic

22 characters of jinx, as I sat transfixed in front of this last night twice through while testing out my (first ever) subwoofer with my stereo. Ringo’s kick, man. And Paul’s bass. What a wild, wild, thing that song.
Writing off things for being U2 adjacent also takes out Eno. Who perfected his shimmer verb technique on With or Without You. True story. Just think about it this way: it was nice of U2 to give Eno and Lanois so much money.
Also Lanois did Peter Gabriel’s So, which has been my favorite record for… 35 years?

I can’t imagine how I would have processed hearing that in 1966. And done on only “4 tracks”. Really puts a light on modern day production.
I still prefer the mono mixes though. It sounds like 4 (+2) artists pushing themselves (and recording techniques) as far as they could, as opposed to having infinite options like these remixes do. I get wanting to redo it for modern ears, but Giles smooths out all the charm of the originals. Plus the monos slam the hardest.

Absolutely brilliant and arguably my standout track for them (until Revolution 9). LOVE hearing it so “unmasked” in these mixes.

I am with you in general re: mono mixes, and have held that stance since the 80s. But. But! And time will tell, of course—these new Gilles mixes are blowing my mind! The mono mix just doesn’t have the commanding power of the bass and kick, and now having heard it that way I can’t unhear it. But, it is not universal – Rain still sounds best to my ears in mono, as does She Said.
And like I said, I just wired up my first sub to my stereo… something that I’m not sure why I never did before… figuring that my hefty Infinity speakers and my stupidly powerful 250 watt per channel amp was giving me the full bass frequencies. That is certainly something influencing the way that I’ve been listening since I got the sub. And in case youre interested, nice subs can be had for $200-ish these days if you look around.
