I am listening to the second (I think) BBC radio adaptation of Lord of the Rings, that I heard when I was child and havent heard since.
Michael Hordern as Gandalf.
John LeMesurier as Bilbo
Ian Holm as Frodo
Robert Stephenson as Aragorn
Its quite a cast! Instantly recognisable voices from the media of my childhood.

Aside from discovering some absolutely wonderful new music this year, a perennial earworm has been a real curio of an album from 1976 (Sea Fluorescent by Alain Bellaïche.) It’s such an odd and charming amalgam of dreamy folk, full-blown funk rock and ambient jazz. The artist’s backstory and how he came to have this record released by Geffen’s Asylum imprint is pretty interesting though.
It’s the instrumental title track which closes out the album that is the prize though. A stunning ambient jazz trip with one of the most amazing grooves I’ve heard in a long time. To my ears, it’s a bit like the Mahuvishnu Orchestra being governed by the tightest parameters of the Oblique Strategies card deck. Also brought to mind Miles Davis’ “Loved Him Madly”.
A sidenote: I first came across this track as part of Floating Points’ lovely mixtape for Late Night Tales.

Currently I’m obsessed with this Japanese album from the 90s by Jigen:
Super unique abstract, musique concrète-y lo-fi beat collages with decontextualized drum’n’bass elements and lots of nice textures.

I’m listening to what sounds like a swarm of Angry Robot Space Bees (ARS Bees) trapped in a jam jar.
This is as close as I get to a festive good mood because I detest Christmas with a vengeance.
Still, it’s nice to get the fairy lights working.
Ho ho ho & don’t let the ARS Bees sting you!
