thanks !

Are you talking about the weekly activity summaries? I personally appreciate them, as:

  1. I have signed up with way too many online communities.
  2. I sometimes drift away from message boards that still hold an interest for me. This may be related to my being an adult with ADHD.
  3. Several times I have steered back to the lines community because of these messages, seeing that further discussion has occurred in topics important to me or that there’s a new topic that warrants checking out. If not for these reminders, I would never have contributed to a Disquiet Junto challenge (or have kept getting lost trying to compose something for subsequent Disquiet Junto challenges).

Aside from the connection to Big Monome Amalgamated, which is about as benign and non-proselytizing of a business concern as I can imagine, this forum hardly seems commercial. Anyway, it’s very easy to opt out of that and other e-mail notifications through your user profile under the EMAILS tab.

thanks - it’s a bit invasive to automatically subscribe you to stuff IMO

I have a suspicion that the summaries might be default behavior for Discourse (the forum engine itself) - I’ve noticed that I get them from from three other Discourse based sites I have an account on.

I personally haven’t looked for the preference to turn them off because I’ve found them mildly useful.

I’ve never received any summary emails from this forum. The options were laid out very clearly during the sign up process and I chose what I did/didn’t want according to the information I was given.

Hi, @drwiener . Welcome to Lines!

Alternative answers to your question include “any running a default-configuration of Discourse where users haven’t altered their settings”, amongst others, some of which have already been supplied.

One person’s “invasive” is another person’s “useful reminder for communities and sites they visit less often”. I’m sorry that an email riled you quite so much, and inspired your very first topic. Once you’ve altered your settings, I’m sure you’ll find that things are pretty chill around these parts.

Hi @drwiener - I can’t add any further information regarding how to configure Discourse to send (or not send) summaries, but welcome to the forum.

thanks for the info! I just was shocked to get 2-3 emails without ever being active on the the site since I signed up. made me feel like I was getting into a commercial venture where defaults send you stuff…

All you’re going to get from Lines is music, community, ideas, and the occasional badger.

Also a straaaange fascination with minimal mixers…

(EDIT: Just realized, no badgers, sorry)

Whew, I was worried you’d bring one of these:
