Necro-bump (as the kids say).

I have one specific question about the Squarp Pyramid, which doesn’t have its own thread, so I thought I’d ask here:

Can it record cv / gate input in live mode as midi notes (pitch / length)? The manual talks about recording CV events, and elsewhere about recording modulation from the cv / gate input, but I just wanted to make sure.

My only dedicated (non-stand-alone) sequencer at the moment is an ER-101/2 combo, and one of the features that I do not want to lose is the record mode.

I have one and I can’t get past the screen interface. Having to menu-dive on any kind of small screen kind of ruins my flow, but especially when it can only display a couple numbers and (poorly) letters. I like the sequencer, but I wish they’d put a little LCD screen on there like on an Elektron device. I think I’m going to re-sell mine (which I bought used, at least).

I’m probably the biggest sequencer lunatic on this forum; I’m surely one of the biggest ones in the world. After 20+ years and 100+ sequencers, the Cirklon has become my end-all, be-all. I could write a novel on it, am currently working on a video series about it, and other stuff. It finally replaced my previous favorite combo of an MC-4 + Roland CSQ-600, so that give some context for how my proclivities are wired. The Cirklon is 800 times easier, faster, more QOL-friendly, and so on. I run my entire studio off of it and can go from jamming to making entire songs seamlessly. It absolutely still has a ways to go with improvements and additions, which are thankfully on the roadmap, but even as-is it’s near perfect.

It’s ok. I’ve got some Elektron gear and most of my synths have sequencers and arps built in that get me through in the meantime. Not as nice, but helps me hone my chops. I’m more a live player transitioning to composition and I want to start branching out my performances to include sequenced bits, so I’ll spend the year and change growing into that style of playing. Plus, what I learn from good Cirklon users helps me understand more about what I need versus want in terms of sequencers and helps refine my own workflows in the meantime.

I got in on the pre-order years back for the GRP R24 sequencer. It’s among the nicest piece of hardware I’ve ever enjoyed.

That MIDI sequencing functionality is included in the current firmware, though I haven’t yet gotten a chance to play around with it, myself.

I’m quite happy with the RE control forge + satellite combo (4 cv inputs can be tested with various logic options, 1 dedicated logic input and one gate input). It can chain sequences together, trigger any other sequence, and if you’re feeling clever, you can design sequences that are just for making decisions.

You set the timing to 0 on each step, and evaluate CV inputs the way you’d like on an individual step basis, and have it trigger different sequences based on the result. you can get really weird with this a make a sort of ‘choose your own adventure’ sequence that’s recursive, never the same way twice, melodic, and predictable. it’s all voltage, and can be quantized or unquantized for microtonal pieces. I’d say the control forge is like having a 251e that only allows you to look in detail at one step at a time.

Very little menu diving, but the time-investment is something you need to prepare yourself for.

Need to re-read through this whole thread, but just now the MidiAlf stuck out to me. Anyone have any experience with that? Looking for a lightweight midi sequencer to go with some new things I’m building, SQ-1 doesn’t cut it for me anymore

:flushed: EDIT fell down a rabbit hole tonight from MidiAlf into the Midibox community. It’s a whole genre of synthesizer I didn’t even know exisisted

I adore the Alf!

Managed to get my hands on one (midi version, no add on cv board) a few years ago after discovering it randomly and searching for awhile as I didn’t have the diy skills at the time. It’s very playable — feels more like an instrument to me than “just a sequencer.” Pete added a bunch of great extras (ratcheting, probabilities) in the last update which made it even more fun for generative work.

Lots of happy accidents in there. :relieved:

I’ve been feeling like the Norns (esp. with Crow and i2c for modular) has the potential to be a contender.

With the grid and some encoders you could get an interface that feels like an Elektron. And with the USB ports you could get a collection of outputs to taste.

(That said it becomes an epic job to make one pretty fast. I’m 70-80% of the way through porting the SQ-1 to the Norns, which is no Cirklon, and that already took maybe four days of work)

As zebra mentioned a few years ago, my vote goes to the 251e.
It has taken me years to fully appreciate this device, but now that I’ve got the parameters under some control, it is just a stellar sequencer.
I absolutely love the randomization features zebra added as well.
It surprises! It has hidden secrets.
The turning point for me was when I stopped looking at it with furrowed brows and just let it get playful.

Discovering this thread has been fun. I’m sequencer crazy.

For what it’s worth, I’m very into the 0ctrl lately. Fun layers that are simple to start unlocking but with a fair amount of creative options. Also has decent amount of cv and gate out.
