If you’re not vibing on a module, ditch it. As others are pointing out, just be sure you dig deep into it so you’re evaluating it with a relatively clear understanding of what it’s capable of.

This is amazing, is Just Friends the only sound source in this?

so yeah…I just ordered one…

Nope, it’s the main voice. There is also Braids that does that little rhythmic bass line, BIA that does drums, and a sampled dissonant choir from the morphagene in the background.

i love jf because of how much variety it gives me for its size, how comfortable it feels for me to incorporate into any patch, and the philosophy behind it.

Just Friends discussing the many facets of their empathic geometry.

but generally speaking about keeping modules, hoarding modules, not giving a module enough of a chance – i say just go with yr gut. if you don’t use something or it doesn’t feel inviting to use then let it go. there are more modules in the sea, you can always buy something back later if you feel drawn to it, and ultimately i think the music you make will come best when you are feeling calm and content with the more psychological aspects of buying and selling gear.

This is great advice. It’s on my to-do list to clean out a closet in my studio so that it’s easier for me to set things aside when I’m on the fence, rather than feeling a need to always use or sell everything I have at all times.

A friend just asked how I use JF as an oscillator, so I did a little video

(with mini Clouds)

heres one i did today - 2 channels of Ansible Kria triggering 2 channels of Just Friends then 5 outs from JF to 2 Mangroves. Shape/Transient mode, nothing in the run jack.

Can you describe your patching to JF here? Mainly curious if you are sending triggers, audio rate, gates or whatever else to the channels.

Ok, I think I remember

Pitch from a Turing Machine. FM from a fixed frequency square out of a Mangrove. Various rhythmic riggers from Pamela’s workout and Maths that somehow sounded good. Run with a dummy.

That should be it.

Thanks! Too bad I’m at work… really want to mess around with this.

Its frustrating because I see all these things on threads like this and I want to try later when I get home. I’m usually too tired to remember it all by the time I get a free moment.

Got my Just Friends module on friday and loving it. I’ve been getting some really warm and rich tones out of it. So far, Floom is my favorite sound mode, running three different outputs into Three Sisters Low, High, and Center inputs, and listening to the All output. The effect that a +/- offset has into Run really does some wonders.

@grey - I’m curious what kinds of sounds you wanted to make with it originally. The expectation vs reality would be interesting. It’s true though that some modules work for some almost immediately and others don’t, so don’t feel guilty if it’s not for you. I sold my Rings module because I just wasn’t able to finesse certain sounds out of it (maybe I’ll try it again one day).

Oh now thats crazy cool, Im planning mannequins system myself and dont have a JF with me (YET lol) but Ive messed around with one a bit, nice to know sound mode can be cut in and out of the mix without the imperative use of a VCA, I imagine it would do some kind of a envelope by itself in some sound mode, now with the ‘‘air’’ input of the mangrove quite explains all the wonderful music Ive been hearin with Cold Mac as only ‘‘VCA’’ not being exactly one.
