As proof of how deep this module is, I’ve recently found I enjoy using JF as a source for triggers to create wonky polyrhythms.

Loving these posts. Thanks, my dudes! Please continue sharing!

@Jonny - I appreciate the multiple voices - which was one of my main points of interest, especially along with the ability to address them alongside Teletype. I guess I should probably rephrase that. It’s just not a very good general purpose sound generator? Thus far, I’ve found that only a few specific knob configurations produce musically pleasing sounds, which makes it much less useful to me in that regard.

I finally got my Three Sisters (they had a big batch of Mangrove’s that ended up in Three Sisters boxes) and had some fun over the weekend mixing some of the different tones of the Just Friends. It makes me wish JF had a “Mixed” mode where it could do a mix of sound and modulation. It seems rare to use all 6 voices in sound mode. Thus far I’m finding a preference for JF as a modulation source.

I fucking love Three Sisters though. What a great module!

I would also add:

I really wish Mannequins included some “reference patches” in their documentation like Make Noise and other manufacturers. I find those to be really helpful in contextualizing the “edges” of how you might want to use a module.

Most of my stuff is MN, and I´d rather not see the ‘‘instructional patches’’ to avoid conditioning and explore on my own in a wild, undocumented way. In my experience this leads to a mono-pupouse modules clouds-style, like ‘is good for this that someone does in that video’ leavin behind unexplored possibilites, just because of a narrow mind induced by heritaged knowledge.

This thread evolving into a Just Friends Ideas thread is really inspiring for me! I’ve just packed up a little 3U with the mannequins set, a chance and a ornament & crime for the holiday break

The way I was thinking about it was actually quite the opposite – instructional patches showing you inventive and non-obvious ways to use a module, to explore the possibilities beyond it’s normal use-cases. This is especially helpful when there’s a a lot self-patching possibilities, such as Just Friends

Exactly. The people who made the thing often have a very clear sense of the possibilities, and having them at least outline the “shape” of what you might do is very instructive for me. Especially so with the Mannequins stuff, as their documentation tends to be extremely opaque. Someone please write a new manual for them!

With apologies to @Galapagoose, I have to agree with this point.

I’m with @Siete on this one. Our intention is to provide a functional description of the interface, with as little technical discussion of patches as possible.

Of course, I’m not opposed to someone making their own technical manual w/ patch examples, I just don’t think that should be everyone’s first introduction.

As the great @mfelix once said “It’s a choose your own adventure kind of thing”.

Only 3 sisters is really missing this. I suppose it is also the most straight forward module, though still has plenty of secrets!

Mangrove
Cold Mac
Just Friends - video series

I personally like the documentation. Its mildly cryptic nature means that revisiting it after a while can reveal more tricks that you missed before.

Here’s an experiment I did today with Just Type synthesis mode:

In my opinion, it is pretty easy to skip the MN instructional videos and patch examples in the manual if you don’t want to see them, but they can show ideas that might not be apparent to anyone besides they module’s designers. As an example, I definitely wouldn’t own a Morphagene if I hadn’t seen specific demos that explain in detail how it works since it has so much going on and is relatively expensive, but it has immediately become my favorite piece of audio equipment.

On the topic of Clouds, I think the contrary is true: I believe if Olivier had posted some videos showing complex feedback routing or some odd modulation ideas when it came out, we might see that being used as more than a 1-in/2-out reverb unit more often.

On a similar note, I feel that I would enjoy the Mannequins modules quite a bit, but I personally have a pretty limited budget, limited amount of time to devote to trying out new modules, and am not near a physical modular shop, and therefore it can be prohibitive to acquire something that I feel I cannot begin to understand without using it first. The Rabid Elephant manuals got me much more interested in each of the modules that he covered, but I still feel there is a virtually infinite amount of experimentation left open. I don’t even remember what I read in that manual a few weeks ago, but I remember enough that I want a Cold Mac since it started to make sense to me.
