I forgot about Jack! I used it in my Linux audio days…I bet it will do exactly what I need. Will investigate.

Hi. Do the little wireless dongles required for some keyboards work through USB hubs, or do I need a dedicated port on my laptop? I’m thinking of something like this:

Thanks.

They work through hubs (in my experience).

Thanks. Much appreciated.

some utility Win 10 software I use daily in is ’ Everything’

I no longer worry too much about where I put things - just use this easy search to get at it.
recently discovered it works on my cloud - brilliant, as that is very much an archive / long term store and soon forget where things are.

Hey so it’s been a while since I’ve used a windows pc and I was wondering what people’s thoughts were on security in windows 10 and what the go-to anti virus software is nowadays? I remember Kaspersky was highly regarded back in the day… Any suggestions? :hugs:

The built-in Defender software in Windows 10 works well. It automatically updates every day and stays out of the way. I feel no need to run any third party anti-virus software. When I’ve used Kaspersky and others in the past, they continually bothered me with pop-ups trying to upsell me. And they hook so deeply into the OS that they’ve caused problems for some people when upgrading to newer versions of Windows.

I try to practice safe Internet habits. I avoid clicking on potential phishing links in emails, I avoid visiting untrustworthy sites, I keep all software up to date (especially browser and OS), I don’t download executables from unknown sites, etc.

Brilliant thanks for your advice, and this defender software runs automatically from start up? Can you recommend what browsers you’ve found to be the safest over the years?

Defender runs automatically at startup. If you buy a computer with a bunch of crapware pre-installed, such as a free trial antivirus, then you’ll probably have to disable that antivirus. Defender automatically starts up any time it notices you have no other antivirus running.

I’ve been using Chrome almost exclusively since it first came out. Google seems very responsive about releasing security fixes. The main thing about browser security is to limit the number of extensions you use. Extensions that have access to your browser history or page content can do nefarious things like stealing passwords and credit cards, so choose your extensions wisely from trusted developers. This applies to all browsers on all platforms, not just Chrome and Windows.

I use Listary for that. I run a lot of apps that way when they’re not the few I pin to the taskbar.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on WSL? I recently learned about it and honestly, my biggest hesitation on moving from mac has been Windows (I guess 7 and 8) lacking a terminal/bash/GNU environment… D:

Anyone use FL studio in WIN10?

I was enjoying it… Then it got updated and is so unstable. Just crackles n pops all over the shop. And that’s after I recently upgraded to 16Gb RAM.

I’m hoping I have the old install for the previous version so I can roll it back

Just confirming this, indeed, works. Picked up an inexpensive Microsoft keyboard yesterday because it also had a trackpad. Trying it out. So far, so good.

And today’s question: say you’re using an external keyboard that lacks a trackpad. What trackpad do you use along with it? (My main memory of using a mouse is serious carpal tunnel pain.)

I detest my trackpad. Much rather use a mouse. However there are a number of usb peripherals that may help.

The Logitech wireless trackpad looks like a good option.

Had this problem as well. This was a cost efficient solution.

My daily driver is the Elecom M-HT1DRBK “HUGE” trackball. Not very portable or compact as the name implies, but comfortable. (Also probably not great for FPS games, but I’m not inclined to play them any more anyway.)

I really miss the original model of the Logitech Trackman Marble, but at some point they kind of messed up the design IMHO. And I’d want the extra buttons, scroll wheel and USB of a modern device.

I have RSI and can only use a touchpad. Never a mouse. I am still sourcing old Cirque Glidepoint devices, which are getting harder to find. For me they work fine because you can hold them in your hands, put them on a surface, or otherwise vary the posture of your hands.
