Thanks! Yeah was thinking of going doing the led driver route. The problem is that it becomes more diy unfriendly because DIP packages will be too big, so smd is needed. Don’t mind presoldering some though. Need more than 16 channels and i2c so thinking of the PCA9956B.

You good designing pcbs? I could use some help when I’m a bit further and tested the current prototype more :slight_smile: Still need to test things like throughput and io protection of the maxim chip.

Hey, I don’t have much experience with SMD but I think I am ready to take a plunge! I designed a couple of PCBs before and they turned out ok (after a couple of iterations). For eurorack pcb design I found it very beneficial to study Music Thing Modular and Mutable Instruments designs, also Neutron Orgone Accumulator schematic/PCB.

I should have a bit more time at the beginning of February once I get some projects out of the way. I would be very interested in working with you on this device.

I am also designing an OSC controlled passive vactrol matrix mixer (teensy driving DIY vactrols using one of those I2C PWM chips) - I have already learnt a bit from your work so far.

I thought about avoiding WIFI as it is supposed to be really temperamental in some environments (for examples venues with dodgy electrics, areas with many wifi networks etc). It might be worth including some kind of provision for ethernet connection (even if on a small optional daughter board).

Small update! Been getting a lot of help from the awesome @mots and his software is already looking great with LFO’s et al! Still working on the pcb and havent order a test batch yet. PCB probably won’t be DIY friendly unless I’m going the presolder of the two smd IC’s route the rest is through hole.

Any updates regarding this project? I am full of ideas to utilise this piece of hardware, especially with PD and TidalCycles. I was also wondering if there’s any chance to stack 2-3 of them?

yes some updates ! indeed.
i have been busy on this project and i am happy to share that the proto i built works quite okay at the moment.

the proto consists of :

in total this sum up to about 60 euro. very decent for 20CVs

what works :

  • osc messaging
  • output in 0 +10volts
  • cv are enough to control modulation, but not precise enough to control pitch (but could work i guess if scaled down to a smaller range like an octave)
  • lfos
  • triggers
  • link clock and reset

what does not work

  • jitter / latency (of the wifi + pi) is too high to allow for precise triggers.
  • link reset is not working as it should

but all in all it is really fun to play with it already !
oh, i almost forgot ! it is piece of cake to put together :slight_smile:

for the final PCB, @lijnenspel can say as he is working on that :slight_smile:

As for the wiring of the proto, it is really piece of cake.

the “hard” it for the pink-0 part, there i just copied the clock reset part from there https://github.com/shaduzlabs/pink-0/blob/master/hardware/pink-0.pdf it is just 4 resistors, 1 cap and one transistor. (they are hidden under the pi on the picture). that said the proto can work without pink, this is totally optional.

As for 20 cv outs : it is dead easy! ground, 3.3v and SPI (mosi, miso, clock, and device select) between the pi and max11300 board. (it is the coloured wires you see on the pic). Then the board itself does all the job, and i have the outputs of the max11300 board directly wired to the jacks, one by one. At this level this is more electricity than electronics :slight_smile:

Not much unfortunately :frowning: Don’t have the headspace to work on it properly lately. I’m also at a point where I don’t see that much benefit in having a pcb as its a relatively easy build and perfectly usable on a protoboard. I guess for a better form factor say a eurorack module a pcb would be handy, but thats just luxury and going towards productisation which I’m not capable of at the moment.

yeah, I was thinking about offering to help out at all with the PCB… but that QFN DAC is just going to be a nightmare to solder by hand…
