Hard to say since I didn’t do it in isolation. For me the thing that improved my synthesis skills the most was the hardware modular - that in turn has made me more fluent with all the synths software and hardware I use. I would say - be patient (it’s so easy to look at other peoples clever creations and think “OMG I could never do that”) the thing to remember is you will learn & your ability will increase just got to get up the learning curve , start small - you can do the straightforward VCO,VCF,VCA,LFO thing to start with and then branch out - adding an element at a time. I don’t have time to spend much time there (lines is my community of choice  ) but the Audulus forum seems very friendly and helpful too.

 thank you - I’ve nearly finished the current (non music) work I’ve been doing & will be releasing the next app before I look for more work - hopefully in the next week or so! (it’s about 3/4 done)

I spent ages sourcing and comissioning a dual tank spring reverb unit which forms a huge part of my outboard sound processing setup. I can’t give iVCS3 any higher praise than that it allows me to not feel utterly bereft of it when making iOS music.

Do you use the reverb as a separate fx plugin?

Yes - in AUM I can load it as an AUv3 plug in effect and it’s a joy!

Is it possible to upload field recordings from a portable recorder (sd card) to ipad on the fly?

With the new ipadOS, yes. It’s in public beta for now but will be out this fall.

Wow. Well there it is. If you’d asked me who I thought would be the first producer to do a whole record on the iPad, Madlib would not have even been a far thought.

I just tried it, and it took some fiddling to figure out, but I eventually got it… turns out you have to look at the back of iVCS3 and turn the audio file players all the way down so that only the audio input is heard. Then play with the pin matrix so that the input flows t the reverb and the reverb flows to the output… and more fiddling with the back page… but it works!

I find that back page to be very elusive…

I just do it this way via AUM - the other way sounds incredibly labour intensive!

I’ll try that, thanks!

Edit: I found it and it works great!!!

I have yet to get Cality, but absolutely love Autony

My pleasure! You can access some of the other effects this way too and the quality of them is truly superb

I just discovered these separate iVCS3 effects recently; finding that loading these “modules” of iVCS3 separately is helping me understand the full version better. Just getting into modular but I’ve got a better sense now of what the VCA, VCO, VCF do by loading them on different channels. Finding that I want to modulate the iVCS3 Envelope, and thinking “oh yeah I can do that on the full version!”, and realizing now the similarities with Model15’s layout. Learning a lot between these and Audulus.

I’ve not thought about it that way, but in retrospect I can see that this is exactly what I did too - in using the different elements of the iVCS3 as indivdual plugins I’ve gained a better understanding of what they can do and feel a lot more confident about using iVCS3 as a whole now (although it’s still hugely intimidating - as well it should be, I think, on some levels - it’s a truly amazing unit!)

His brother been doing it for a while and mightve tipped him on methods (believe it or not)

Until this news i’d say the highest quality ios beats i’d heard were from two Steves: Lacy & Spacek.

This is lovely - even on my phone speaker it sounded beautifully pleasing to the ear

I finally got around to making my first video of iOS beatmaking. It’s a very quick overview of how I use KOALA, AUM and Audioshare to make things on my iPad. Hopefully there will be more of these in the near future, but I guess that depends on whether people actually want to watch them…
