Has anyone used a Beatstep Pro with iOS apps and hardware synths/drum machines?

I’m wanting to use the iPad in a dock as a sound module, effectively, but, as the BSP doesn’t send polyphonic information, I was going to use a MIDI sequencer within the iPad to control a polyphonic iOS synth.

Essentially, all I would really need is for the BSP to send MIDI clock data to the iPad, I guess, whilst sequencing a hardware drum machine and hardware monosynth.

Has anyone done that?

If it’s just sending clock that means I’m not actually using a channel, doesn’t it?

So, in theory, I could use the iPad (with its own sequencer) as well as my MS-20 Mini, Moog Werkstatt-01 and Vermona DRM 1 (on the drum channel, obviously).

I’ll try it all out tomorrow if my stepdown converter arrives (long and upsetting story, but basically the DRM didn’t arrive with a power cable and, upon closer inspection, is a US specification device…).

I’ve been using an iPad into an Elektron Model:Samples. Audio from the iPad pipes directly into the MS via usb and sequencing the iPad over midi from the six MS tracks. Makes for a very flexible & portable setup with a mobile powerbank supplying power to the MS. Getting out of the normal studio to sit down with headphones on without the network distractions of a laptop has been a very focused revelation. On the iPad I was using AUM as the host but as it wont take midi clock fro the MS (or anything) have moved to Apematrix. I have a LOT of ios synths but most reliably use the Audio Damage Quanta and the Enso looper they make as well as the wonderful Braids port Spectrum and the Bram LFO utilities to add extra LFOs to the MS which only has one per track.

Im thinking of doing this too for the exact same reason. Before I upend my entire iPad work flow is there anything you miss thus far about AUM?

I miss the simple mixing channel style interface from AUM. Level setting in Ape is on a separate page. Ape though is more flexible as a patching interconnecting thing & seems to be less heavy on CPU (I’m running a new Air) if the CPU gauge behavior running multiple Quanta instances is any guide.

ApeMatrix seems like a good potential option for me. I’ve been wanting to have the iPad be a part of the VCV rack flow. Using studiomux to get audio IN to the iPad, but to get the audio from StudioMux to to Samplr and Borderlands Granulizer I need to use BOTH AUM and AudioBus. NOT preferred. Maybe apeMatrix is the right choice!

One of the first things I tried with Ape Matrix was to get send audio into Sampler. No go. Sending into Borderlands is easy enough in AUM (set up a send channel and put Borderlands in a FX slot) but I am not seeing it working as a send in ApeMatrix. :frowning: Shout if you get either working.

Samplr only works as an output in Audiobus so you might try that…

Ah, that’s a massive shame - I love AUM and was wanting to use that as the hosting to sync with my outboard gear, but if it won’t accept clock from the BSP that looks like I’ll have to choose another solution.

It is a shame. It really should be able to do this. All I know is Kymatica wants it to happen.

BM3 just updated with it. Maybe we’ll get some movement now that a couple other options exist.

Yeah I know. But as @kasselvania said this is far from ideal.

Would Link to Midi work for your device? I have used it to enable sync with devices thru AUM.

Oh, wow - I’ve not tried that but will give it a go. Thank you!

Try running a sync out of BSP into the Korg SyncKontrol app on your phone (it you have an iPhone) and then sync to AUM using Link? I think I did this before for something similar and it worked great.

EDIT: I think that might only go the other way now that I revisit that Korg app, it sends a sync signal, it doesn’t receive one. I will poke around later, surely this has to be do-able.

Brilliant, thanks.

On a side note: I’m looking for something that would generate chords for other apps on an iPhone. At present I’m finding combinations on the keyboard and then drawing them into Fugue Machine which is perfectly fine but it’s such a pedestrian use of FM and quite a long winded way of trying chords that go together. Something like Chordion would be fantastic, but, alas, not (yet) universal.

Tonality is maybe what you’re looking for?

That looks absolutely fantastic! Thanks!

Another app that is excellent for trying chords out together is Suggester - it’s universal and exports midi between apps. I particularly like this one for ‘traditional’ songwriting. Hope these help, Tony

Fugue Machine for some fugues

Brilliant, I’ll give that a go. Tonality seems incredible, though - I think that’s likely to become my new favourite tool!
