I’m looking for one of these lightning usb adapters to connect a midi keyboard to my iPad. Should I buy a original Apple adapter or do some of these cheaper non-Apple ones just work fine? (I read some quite divided reviews on amazon etc.)

Buy the Apple! Generic ones are unreliable.

So much this. It’s the one non-negotiable when it comes to iOS.

I have an apple refurbished cck and a cable from aliexpress. Both work fine.

And buy the one that lets you charge the iPad at the same time.

Hey. Thanks for your opinions!! Will go for an original one. And yes definitely gonna buy one with the extra charging option.

So I just got an iPad and downloaded the spacecraft granular synth, but when I export the audio on my mac that is barely audible, do you know why and what can I do? Any suggestions for apps I have to download to be all set to make music with the iPad?

I don’t know about your sound level problem, sorry, but for recommendations you should scroll through this thread  it’s a treasure trove of great tips!

A fab app for saving samples, recordings and sharing them between apps is AudioShare. And it also works great alongside AUM. I mention it because it can normalise an audio file - if, perhaps, yours is too quiet? If that’s not the problem then maybe try hard quitting the app and reloading. Or, if you’re using the app hosted in another application (e.g AUM or Cubase etc.) try instead using it as a standalone app and see if you have the same problem.

I have ableton live and I just bought an iPad for making music. Why do I need AUM?

AUM is the glue that sticks everything together. It doesn’t have to be AUM - Apematrix is similarly fantastic - but they’re audio and MIDI mixing desks and signal path processors. They allow applications to talk to one another.

With AUM/Apematrix you can multitrack record and then transfer them (Audioshare - Dropbox (ie) - Ableton) for further mixing.

So I’m treading down the iOS path here, I have an unused 2019 iPad that I want to put to work for audio stuff. Right now just focusing on granular looping and some effects perhaps. Already downloaded Borderlands, really impressed. Also, Tardigrain, which seems cryptic but could be cool. I’ll be getting AUM soon too, seems popular.

Sorry I don’t have time to look through 750 messages for this but looking for some interface options:

Is there anything out there that allows a direct connection with iPad and powers it as well? Sends audio back and forth, as well as midi, plus the potential of CV?

I’m looking for stand alone or euro solutions as possibilities.
I saw someone mentioned the iConnectAudio4+. There’s the Expert Sleepers stuff. What else?

Check out the new MOTU M series. They require an adapter cable to provide power but otherwise fit the bill very nicely. I’m planning to get one before long, likely the M4.

It can also be used as an interface with a Mac and probably PC although I don’t pay much attention to P.C. stuff because I don’t own any…

You can use any class compliant audio interface, and to power your iPad while using it, use this:

Awesome thanks.
This may seem like a dumb question, but to pass midi data out of an app on iOS, I’ll need an extra module in euro that does midi --> cv, right? The ES-8 doesn’t convert midi data to cv internally, right?

I’ve got my modulation needs covered in Euro already, but I’d potentially like to use an app on the iPad to sequence as well, or as a controller… The apps aren’t sending CV data usually I’m guessing? Just midi data?

The ES-8 is for (DC-coupled) audio signals. The FH-2 is what you’re after. I’m using mine with direct USB-C connection with an iPad Pro. Very nice and versatile with the right apps.

Ah but this doesn’t pass audio at all?
I’d like to be able to do audio as well, like to be able to do effects processing on the iPad and transfer back and forth.
I’m still in the discovery phase right now, trying to figure out what I want/need.
Is there one unit that does audio I/O and also will convert midi signals from iOS into CV for the modular?
I’m guessing I’ll have to get two interfaces.

Ah right, sorry I missed that. If you want audio, MIDI, and CV all in one unit, I guess the new MOTUs do that.

I think audulus and zmors can maybe do cv output? Could probably do sone kind of midi to cv as well, but not my wheelhouse.
