My iPad was going kaput (screen becoming non-responsive after almost two years) and I got a replacement from the Apple Store just this past week (benefits of that extended warranty), so I’m in the process of re-installing apps. Rather than just reproduce what I had before, I’m doing this one by one, to get reacquainted and to be more selective. So far, what my memory and experience are telling me are central to my use of the iPad are as follows. My backlog is quite sizable, and I’ll be pulling more from it, but this is the core for now:

AUM - Audio Mixer
Audiobus 3
AudioShare
MIDI Wrench
Loopy HD
STROM
Koala
Samplr
Ripplemaker
Audulus
Synth One
Nature-Oscillator

Update: I’ve now added these from my backlog, as I rebuild my iPad rig:
Borderlands Granular
Replicant 2
ReSlice

Update 2: Added these from my backlog, as well:
Cubasis 2
Autony (still working on this one)

Also, as a side note, if you are learning to play guitar, the app Chord! (that’s the one with an exclamation point) is an excellent chord database.

Is there a way to change the overall buffer length in iDensity when it’s being used as an AU?

Do you dig Nature-Oscillator? Such a rad idea. I’ve always been intrigued by that guy’s stuff, but all his apps have to be used standalone. I have Sunvox and Phonopaper, I think.

Do you mean the recording buffer? Not that i can see. I think the idea would be to record your scrubbing of the area you want.
Can you do this in the stand-alone app?

Yeah, it’s a great noise source. I’ve been experimenting with recording it looking at the UI of another app that’s making sound, like STROM, and then combining them.

So cool! And runs on my old iPad mini. I’m doing a Cocoquantus demo tomorrow and think I will feed this camera stream into Coco. Thanks for the recommendation!

One quick heads up - there’s a problem with Borderlands on iOS 12 due to Apple adding a new required setting for apps (they have to specify why they use the built in mic / audio input. previously this just worked). If you attempt to record a sound in with the built in mic or line in (using the rec in button in the bottom menu), the incoming stream will be silent. I’ve fixed this in the upcoming update, but in the meantime you can work around it by routing audio in via Aum or Audiobus. Incidentally, the upcoming update also addresses a number of the IAA bugs and works much more smoothly with IAA and Audiobus.

In any case, thanks for buying the app. I hope you enjoy it! Please do let me know if you have questions.

Looking forward to the new update thanks for this amazing app!

That’ll be great. It can get chaotic, so I keep it low level.

I keep FieldScaper on the front page of my phone. It’s perfect for capturing quick soundscapes on the go.

Elastic Drums is my favorite drum machine that I’ve found, mainly because of the very smart and intuitive automation and effect routing. The effect routing in particular strike a good balance between flexible and obtuse, meaning that you’ll run into a lot of happy accidents. I also really like Patterning 2, especially because velocity is the biggest focus of the sequencer. It really drives me crazy how unimportant velocity is on most interfaces, and I feel like I’m hearing more and more music without any drum articulation (I believe I whined about this on @darwingrosse’s podcast hahah).

The apesoft stuff is great (iDensity, iPulsaret, etc.) for microsound, along with the mighty Borderlands (can’t wait for v2!).

Samplr still remains a classic. AUM is the essential backbone of an iOS setup.

Newer apps that I’m enjoying are Koala and Geoshred. Koala is a simple and fun sampler that reminds me of the SP-303 or Pocket Operator KO. Geoshred is an MPE controller (and surprisingly flexible string synthesizer) with a performance-focused interface.

Is there any chance at all that it will work with apematrix in the future, or is that on their end? It gets less chatter, but I love it. Regardless, sickest app. Thank you!

Haven’t spent as much time with the standalone, but I assumed that when loading up a file, the length would adjust. Maybe the distinction is more about effect/playback than au/standalone. There may well be workarounds, but I feel like being able to set the buffer shorter would give you less time before the effect kicks in/fewer tails when the informing audio stops. Not a huge thing, all told, and still a really great tool.

not sure. haven’t tried out apematrix, but i will check it out! if it just depends on IAA working properly, then it should work. i’ll pick up a copy and test.

…and thanks!

Sorry. I thought you meant live recording. An imported sample will take up the entire buffer regardless of its size. Does that answer your question?

Since we’re on the subject of SAMPLR, anybody out there have any success with routing other things (inter-app audio) to samplr within iOS? I can sync it’s midi clock, sample in from my zoom recorder or mic, but never gotten audio to port to it from another app. I really wanna run like animoog and use samplr to loop it, or use any app to sample in.

No. And its a crying shame. I really wish it would get an update.

That’s an excellent call. I did this when I recently moved all my music gear to a new space and just connected things almost one at a time until I’d either remembered how much (and why) I loved them or decided that I didn’t really need them any more.

Thanks for making it - it’s incredible and really inspiring!

I couldn’t agree more. I honestly can’t overstate how important it has been in altering my way of thinking about production and getting away from the linear style of production that I ultimately had found really unsatisfying.

Apparently it “will happen.” I guess the developer works for Apple now (and is plenty busy) so the work is taking longer than expected. Very much looking forward to this as well!

If you put it in the output slot in Audiobus you can run other sounds into it

I struggled with this for a while and eventually found the answer on the Facebook group or page or whatever

At any rate it works!

Now may be a good time I buy AUM or AudioShare if you don’t have them yet
