I’d like something I can tweak while playing other synths in AUM, not just program stuff. Is patterning a good option?

Is that a good option when playing live with other synths at the same time or does it work better alone programming patterns?

Patterning is pretty tweakable. It’s sample based. If you want more knob turning fun a drum synth like elastic drums or Ruismaker noir might be more fun

I’d say Ruismaker Noir is good if you’re using AUM and you have some synth channels sequenced and you want to quickly try out some FM-sounding drum beats without really having to think too hard about what you’re doing. It’s fun! But try and find some examples of the sounds online first as you might not like the engine - it can often sound quite harsh. If you’re using AUM it runs as an Audio Unit (i.e. as a window within AUM), which is fab. Patterning is amazing, if you want to make full songs - including performing them in AUM, it’s really compelling/fab. You can randomise a lot of the parameters so for live jamming you can keep it from sounding stale. But, it’s not an Audio Unit, so when editing you’re taken outside of AUM. The circular sequencer layout is brilliant.

I returned Ruismaker because it was so limiting. Patterning 2, on the other hand, is probably my most used app. It’s fantastic. Loads of fun features and creative options. I honestly think it opened up a whole new approach to rhythm for me. There’s tonnes if great kits to download, loads of parameters to tweak (with midi if you want), and, while it is sample based, it will also send midi so you can use it to trigger synths for percussion or melody.

Some oddness around the file menu, and the effects are only available on the master output, and no undo, but these are small issues given what a great tool it is. I think it single-handedly makes the iOS environment worthwhile for music making.

Are the downloadable kits for free?

Patterning 2 includes a large number of free downloadable kits and you can also share kits with others through the app.

I tried ruismaker but it’s not what I am looking for. I’ll try patterning 2 but I am also considering the iEectribe or DM1

How is the velocity response on the Patterning 2 pads? I need some pads for external gear so an amazing app would be a nice bonus…

If that even applies in iOS land?

Or maybe Mosaic can do it?

Glass doesn’t travel, so it’s not an MPC pad. To get velocity response you use a slider.

velocity in Patterning 2 is mapped to how high on the pad you tap.

Ah. Understood. Thank you both.

Hi guys anyone using the Korg iElectribe on iPad? I would like to know if it is possible to Sync it via MIDI with external hardware…for example, I would like to send clock out from the iElectribe through iRig Midi 2 to my mother 32

iElectribe can receive, but not send, MIDI (including clock).

So maybe I could send MIDI out from my beatstep to keep it in sync via MIDI clock! Have you tried something similar yourself?

i tend to make AUM the center of my iOS music making and it can only receive clock via Ableton Link.

So I could send tempo via ableton link and then MIDI out from AUM that’s great! I am just wondering if iElectribe will sync with the tempo in AUM

It should, I see iElectribe as a MIDI receiver in AUM midi routing.

That’s great I will try that thanks
