Hey all… Does anyone have any suggestions on apps that can run on a 3rd generation ipad? ios 9.3.5

Absolutely!

On mine I either currently have or have had in the past:
Audioshare
AUM
AUFX collection
Beatmaker 3
Animoog
iVCS3
Filtatron
Fugue Machine
Gestrument Pro
iMini (the Moog Model D app doesn’t work on 9.3.5 but Arturia’s version does and it’s great)
Caustic
Fieldscaper
Phasemaker
Ripplemaker
Most of the Audio Damage plugins (Adverb, Discord, Eos, Enso. Filterstation, Fuzzplus, Grind, Quatromod, Ratshack, Replicant, Roughrider)
Chordion
Patterning
Ribbons
Sector
RE-1
RM-1
Strom
Streemur
Klevgrand stuff (DAW Cassette, DAW LP, Degrader, Svep, Haaze
Volt
Steps
Borderlands
Samplr
Degrader
Launchpad
Blocs Wave
iMPC Pro

Some of them aren’t the latest version and I can’t vouch for how well they all work as some of them are recent purchases that I’ve only used on my Pro or iPhone but I’ve no reason to imagine they won’t be great. Bottom line is: you make AMAZING stuff with the apps you can get on an iPad 3rd gen!

Thanks for the list! I’ve always used ableton and want to integrate the ipad as a textural compositional tool along side my modular setup.

My pleasure! Using AUM you can sync with Ableton Link and utilise things like Borderlands and Samplr to add all kinds of textures to your work. Strom and Streemur could do lots of fun things too, especially when allied with various FX.

Do you have any experience with this app on a smaller screen? I avoid apps because I have an SE, but this looks awesome.

I first got it on an iPhone 4s and it worked fine. Obviously it’s small, but totally usable

The existence of Ableton Link in iOS apps has resulted in the first temptations I’ve felt to use Ableton again in many years.
This topic inspired me to start investigating some iPad apps I have in a deeper way - so much genuine innovation happening, even in the apps I end up not using much.

And even outside of any Ableton integration, Link is a just great tool for syncing things that otherwise can’t be synced. For instance I use it via the Korg sync control app to sync my volca modular to an AUM session.

That’s an excellent call! Does the sync control app work with an SQ-1?

I believe the sq-1 has midi clock over usb, so it should be easy to sync to iOS apps in general.

Fantastic - my hardware synths want to join the iOS fun!

Streemur is rad, though a little chaotic. Sometimes I accidentally find a good station and have no way of finding out what it was. Every time the word “Sweedish” appears I crack up a bit.

It works great for how I use it on the phone. I literally just open it up and hit record/stop/play. Each time you hit record, it saves a new timestamped file, so I don’t need to mess with anything. It then makes the files available to AudioShare/Dropbox/etc. I haven’t used it on the phone for actual processing.

I also asked this in the field recording thread, but maybe it’s more relevant here.

I love FieldScraper, but would like a better mic to use it with for both loud and quiet sounds.

Does anyone have recommendations for a nice iPhone compatible mic that is small enough to carry around most of the time? I was looking at the Shure MV88+…

I love the mic on my Zoom H5 recorder, and they do a couple for the iPhone - the Zoom iQ6 and iQ7. Not used them, but I believe they are similar to the ones they use on their Zoom recorders.

The Zoom u44 has the option of fitting mics to it, which might be an excessive option but would provide a high quality audio interface and mics in one box

@petesasqwax and @wm.wragg thanks for the replies. I have a Zoom H5, and it’s ok. I find the audio quality a bit noisy and I’ve never loved working with it. I feel that if I wanted a better stand alone recorder I’d just get one at this point, but then I’d still have an extra thing to carry.

What I really want right now is a good sounding mic that will fit in a jacket pocket (or similar) along with my phone for daily carry, rather than a whole recorder that I know I’ll only take when recording is the purpose of my outing.

@wm.wragg I’ll check out the Zoom iOS mics for sure, though I’m not sure they’ll be better than the Shure MV88…

I have to admit, this is partially why I use the old 4s for this: super-cheap good quality 30-pin pics

Updated my iOS arsenal (or, in my sense of it, picnic basket) with three more apps.

Thanks for the recommendation - have a 30 pin mic on its way and a dusty old 4s cleaned up and ready! :+1:
