How about a laptop with a daw?

To further elaborate. Since getting hooked on iOS, my desire to get my hands on certain bits of hardware has pretty much disappeared. I look at some FM synth, for example, and figure I can get those sounds for $15 by buying a new app. But there must remain things for each of us that, even in the electronic realm, can not be accomplished/imitated by iOS. These may even be a result of certain work styles; for me, mixing remains a computer/daw process despite some iOS options being available.

For me interacting with my instruments is still paramount. For example, while Drambo is arguably more powerful than my Octatrack, I still enjoy interacting with my OT more. Same with knobby synths, drum pads, ect. If I were someone without the resources to spend on hardware, iPad all day long. Perhaps one could get past this with a controller. There is a lot to say for the custom design that goes towards a usable, playable physical interface controlling what is essentially software.

But if you’re good with apps then go with it.

My desire for acquiring new bits of hardware has been severely diminished by iOS as well…but it’s also increased my appreciation for the hardware I already own. FM synths are a good example of this - all of the convenience and ease of use in something like Phasemaker is a treat, but it sure does feel good to sit down with a DX100 and just get lost in that.

Ios can’t load a number of nice VSTs/AUs. The iOS DAWs are also all pretty limited. And only a handful of iOS synths sound good to me: the Moogs and Zeeon.

Limitations can often be helpful, musically. I really like AUM. I use Logic, but I don’t like it. It’s bulbous. And it’s the best DAW for my workflow.

Any suggestions for a delay that can do sound on sound looping like the el Capistan or EHX 16 second? I have kd7 and I love the sounds but it only goes up to 1000ms and oscillates out of control with the feedback past about .5. I can’t really dial in a SoS mode. I built a Max patch that fits my needs perfectly but trying to move away from the MacBook.

Have you tried Kosmonaut by Bram Bos? It has sound on sound and the developer is really helpful if there’s something you’re trying to achieve but aren’t sure how to. Drop him a message on Twitter perhaps and check that it can do what you want before buying it

I really like both Moog apps but also the Korg ones sound great - Odyssey especially - and I really don’t make many tracks without reaching for iSEM or iVCS3. I guess it all really depends on what you’re after. I grew up on music creates with odd, funky old synths so I suppose I tend to gravitate to those machines (physical and virtual) that manage to conjure up those kinds of sounds.

I do agree that there isn’t really a DAW that has totally gripped me yet. I didn’t really click with the traditional approach of Auria, but I’m very impressed with the power of it. I’m experimenting with BM3 at present but am aware that it can be unstable in some circumstances. Ultimately, though, I really like the limitations that not having a go-to DAW provides. It means that I render out loops and throw them into AUM more often than not, which has become a Tubby-style mixing desk for me. I’ve found the limitations quite liberating and empowering - plus I have Ableton which I can always throw things into if I feel I can’t finish them within iOS

That looks great! I’ll download it tomorrow

EDIT: downloaded now. Nearly perfect! Having a blast with this and Ripplemaker for now but can’t wait to try with the euro rig tomorrow. Thanks a ton for the recommendation!

I like those synths too. I’d be happy with Cubasis if it wasn’t locked into 4/4 at a single tempo. I need rhythmic freedom.

My pleasure - that’s great to hear!

Does anyone know if Drambo has an undo for patching? I accidentally deleted a module and quickly learned that the big undo button is only for sequencer entries…

There doesn’t appear to be at this point. If there is an undo feature for the modules, I haven’t found it yet. Early adopter high five? :frowning:

…and just in case it comes in handy, I did notice a weird behavior with regards to the undo button and step components - if you accidentally overwrite a step with step component modules and they disappear, when you hit undo it will appear that nothing happens, but if you select another step and then go back to step you were just on, it updates the display properly and you’ll see the step component modules back where they should be.

My Lyra-8 clone: Mononoke and Alteza reverb with Korg nanoKontrol 2 to change feedback, cutoff and some other parameters.

No disrespect to brambos, but Mononoke doesn’t even get close to the intensely satisfying weirdness of the Lyra. It’s a fine app in its own right, but it will never replace the real thing.

You are right! Should have put that in quotes. I have a modular and I am aware that it’s near impossible for an app to come even close to immediacy and wierdness.

Damn, not to doubt right off the gun, but that is a claim for an app! Appreciate you mentioning, though, seems it’s only $10 on ipad to try out presently. Thanks!

I’d buy immediately if it was in Pultec blue with the industrial faceplate.

I haven’t done a lot of EQ with my ipad. Closest is Filtatron, which i never use anymore (though I loved it when it first appeared, madly so, but it’s a really stiff filter after some use. Moog should really revise it now that they have better more buttery emulation in their Model D and System 15 apps) yet there’s the Matrix Vocoder which is my favorite Ipad app and I still use constantly: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/matrix-vocoder/id1464318049 - not an EQ in traditional sense but very wonderful for tone shaping.

Hey folks. Gonna grab a generative sequencer. What’s your favorite? Cykle? Polyphase? Mozaic? Thanks!

My go-tos are Polyphase and Xynthesizr
