I’m not using my iPad too much these days, it’s more often in my son’s little hands, but I got a lot of apps and these are my favorites:

  • AUM and Audioshare
They’re fundamental tools in the iOS ecosystem, with the former just been updated

  • Animoog
It sounds great and its UI is great too

  • Droneo
If you want to go deep into programming your drones

  • nanoloop
Because I love everything from Oliver

  • Patterning
The best sequencer ever, I still have to buy Patterning 2

  • Really anything from Audio Damage, Bram Bos and Klevgrand

The new iPad Mini 5 (2019) was recently announced and is already available for sale. Just ordered one to replace a v3 mini. It has the same A12 processor as the larger iPad Air.

Can’t possibly echo this enough!

Oh snap mustve missed it! I’m so glad they’re keeping the mini. Love the sketchpad size but desktop capabilities. With more power, now it won’t fall to bits when an AUv3 Moog is loaded. I like using mine with a stylus.

Gonna throw the ApeMatrix name back out there. I have Audiobus, and it’s fine, never tried Aum, but ApeMatrix does a ton of rad stuff with LFOs controlling parameters inside of apps and routing sound any way you can think of. It’s basically permanently open in my ipad.

I have it. Barely used it. I really need to get on. Everything apesoft does is great.

I did, and properly strung together my thought/question was something like “given the buffer size can adjust when you’re loading a file, shouldn’t it be adjustable when you’re using live input?”

Words are hard sometimes. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Could you point me toward the advice that Chris gave on social media about the 10.5 pro?

My current pick is the 2nd gen iPad Pro, particularly the 10.5” model. The 3rd gen Pros are dogs. The current Air would probably be okay too, but I don’t know this from experience, only hearsay.

I wonder why? I haven’t seen anything about them not being good, though I haven’t looked that closely.

Good question. I’m sure he’d elaborate if asked (likewise if he’s asked about most things other than “what app is that?” on his Instagram… it’s possible he might have got a little tired of that one)

Thanks!

Me neither, and I was about to get one before the clutch blew out on my car this weekend and the cost of the newer model became prohibitively high. But I still would like a second iPad, and I’m trying to figure out whether it’s better to go with a refurbished 10.5 Pro or the new Air. (I know, why would I need two iPads? But I really like some of the sounds I’m producing with the one I have right now, and I’d like to have two for what amounts to a really robust live performance setup.)

I think in a response on twitter he laid the blame squarely at USB-C - and by extension I’m guessing, the lack of a headphone out. Which is a bummer. But I guess it forces use of an interface (or DAC, at least).

The iPad Mini 5 has a headphone out and a lightning port. It has the same processor as the new Air, and when you mount it on an arm it’s very convenient and not hard to use.

When I first read this I imagined your mini mounted to your actual arm - like those iPhone running armband things. Nice…

I’ve got a recent gen pro (the 12.9). I like the usb C, I like how powerful it is. I bought the google usb c headphone adapter for the odd times I need a quick audio out but mostly use it with my NI Komplete audio 6 . I make a ton of music on it. Love it

I got a Twelve South HoverBar 3 about three years ago, I mount it on a little DJ shelf that I put the BeatStep Pro on.

I’m choosing to hold on to this and keep that mental image rather than the true one above

Just wanted to drop here a link to one metal arm clamp thingy I have purchased and that served me very well, in case anyone is looking for this kind of item: I like the fact that the arm is pretty long and super strong
