I appreciate how well Fluss works on the iPad mini, which many music apps seem to overlook.

Looking for a super compact midi keyboard (think OP1 size max) to use with my iPad. How’s Bluetooth midi these days? Worth pursuing or should I stick to something with a usb?

Man Bluetooth latency is still quite the bitch. Best to hardwire in for optimal performance and response.

Bluetooth is the enemy of the musician.

As an alternate viewpoint, I didn’t have any timing problems fingerdrumming via BLE MIDI using an iPad and Mac with Birdkids’ OffGrid (which I don’t necessarily recommend otherwise, the company support isn’t the best). Bluetooth audio is pretty horrible as far as latency goes, but MIDI is doable IMHO. Of course it may depend on device / how well they implement it.
Planning to get one of these for my Linnstrument 128 soon: WIDI Master - Wireless MIDI Adapter via Bluetooth by CME
The good thing is that pretty much all controllers that have BLE MIDI also have USB, so if the Bluetooth side sucks or is unreliable, you can always use a cable

Mini Fluss jam. First 20 seconds are my raw sample. Then we’re hearing my sample loaded into Fluss. At first I’m letting my patch play. Then I do doing gentle modulation gestures. I eventually crank the feedback knob to max (it’s wild). The final part involves a few shake ipad to randomize moments. There was no processing done after the Fluss output.
Couple of things stand out from playing more.
- Setting up a nice static patch and doing gentle parameter modulation is really satisfying and intuitive. It’s easy to get susprises but also easy to control the results.
- The smash (randomize by shaking the device) feature is just killer. It doesn’t feel like a normal randomize button because it sets the modulators in motion. It also feels extremely useful for performance. Because the app controls are so simple and streamlined, it’s very easy to do a smash shake and then tweak in the direction I want.
- Wishlist item for me: a button or gesture to that gives touch access to the device shake effect. I’m personally very wary of issues with cables and dongles when using my ipad for performance, and shaking the whole ipad feels like begging for trouble with my setup.

I have a WIDI Master and a WIDI Jack and use either with my Linnstrument 128. The system works fine. Someone was complaining that the latency with iPad or MacOS was too high. I don’t hear it. But you still need to power the Linnstrument. I have a little Anker USB battery bank for that. It will run the Linnstrument all day.
Also, I picked up a pair of AIAIAI Wireless+ headphones on Black Friday. It does succeed with the wireless latency problem. The jury is still out for use cases. But I’m leaning in their favor.

It’s a little bigger footprint than the op-1, but I really like the Korg Nanokey Studio as an iPad companion. It’s got pads and knobs as well as keys, which always come in handy. The keys are a bit clacky and cheap feeling, but are velocity sensitive and function well enough. I’ve found Bluetooth midi to be perfectly responsive and reliable and had no problem using it for performance (unlike Bluetooth audio which is laggy and horrible for real-time playing)

I second your suggestion. I carry the plain ole’ Nanokey with me as my go-to mobile midi controller. It’s survived living in my bag for about 7 years at this point, and works great on both ios and mac.
That’s roughly my plan as well, I have the Anker power bank that should fit Geert Bevin’s 3D printable battery holder for the Linnstrument, just need to print the battery holder somewhere and buy the WIDI dongle, and see how it works in practise.
That’s the final part of the puzzle for me too, but it’s an expensive thing to buy for amount of convenience I’m not entirely certain about and I don’t think there are local retailers I could try out a pair at, so probably waiting to either find a pair used or somewhat discounted.

I am not happy with the sound character of the AIAIAI Wireless+. I find it dull, undetailed and uninspiring. I don’t want “neutral”. I am not mastering. I am playing my wacky synth patch.
I was going to return the AIAIAIs. But I figured out a hack such that I use a gender changer (TRS-socket-to-TRS-socket) to plug my trusty Grado SR80s into the AIAIAI headband which houses the wireless receiver. I put the headband around my neck and the Grados on my ears and voila! Wireless low-latency Grados! I need to do some cable management. (The Grados have a long cable. I may splice a jack into the cable to make it short.)

New Drambo update came in yesterday with some nice new features like clip naming and custom lengths per clip, plus some new plugins and fixes.
On another note… Looking for some new flexible reverbs, I grabbed the Kymatica AU3FX:1-4 bundle and that’s a really nice tool kit of stuff for $4 each. They all sound great and the reverb and delay have some cool and pretty unique features.

Wow some of these new Drambo features/modules are fantastic…
You can now hot swap entire rack presets instantly with the pads - or a mapped midi command. This is perfect for live performances.

I ended up buying the korg Nanokey studio as a midi controller! Merry Christmas to me! I also picked up Other Desert Cities and Grind by Audiodamage. Both really fantastic sounding apps so far. I’ve got a new iOS only album coming out soon and I might tack on a song or two if I can get anything recorded and finished during my time off from work this week
Here is the first thing I recorded with the new midi controller and both of those apps. The signal chain was Moog Model 15 → Other Desert Cities → Grind → Rough Rider Compressor. It’s a gnarly one.

Hello friends!
As I continue to learn Irish Trad music for the keyless flute - I’m trying to rope my iPad into the process. I’m really enjoying forScore as a PDF manager.
What I’m looking for is a way to selectively loop specific chunks of an mp3.
- file player
- quickly set loop brace lengths (ideally selecting from the waveform)
- non-pitched tempo adjustments
I’ve been using AudioShare and forScore for playback. But I want to be able to set loop point on my device.
Thanks!

LoopyPro might help you with most of these. You can try it out before purchasing at least

I like Other Desert Cities a lot.

If you are looking for real-time granularization, the Bleass Granulizer, Tardigrain, CsGrain, and the granular delay in Other Desert Cities come to mind. Oh, and Soup, which is lesser known but might be my favorite. Borderlands is more on the fly recording rather than real-time, but it also feels very in the moment. Synths like FRMS, SpaceCraft, and Quanta offer recording, too.
