there are SO many options but i mostly use drambo because it does all the elektron style tricks, is quite stable and is regularly updated. plus the modular side of it keeps things open and flexible in a way that fits my workflow. i prefer to use it with the apple pencil, as the UI is pretty dense.

I second Patterning 3. Pretty brilliant.

I personally bounced off of Drambo, for some reason I could never totally wrap my head around it.

How about Cykle and Polybeat, two fun step Sequencers.

For a piano roll style experience, I’ve been using Atom. There’s also the more full-featured Atom 2, but I haven’t tried that one.

Autony deserves a mention here, too. It’s a brilliant and lesser-known/underrated sequence generator that’s one of my go-tos. (The developer’s other apps are similarly neat.)

In regards to Patterning 3 - does anyone know if there is a way to set the key you want midi notes to output through? Or alternatively, how to quantize midi info within AUM?

I use the Rozeta Scaler but I am not sure if it’s still available for download. I route Patterning (or whatever other sequencer I am using) through it on AUM. I believe there’s a way to do it on the app directly but I cannot check right now as I am packed to move to a new place tomorrow. Anyone know for sure?

Ah - Rozeta looks like a decent solution, but Note to Be does the same thing but is cheaper!

If that’s all you need, then that seems like a solid option, but the Rozeta Sequencer Suite is only $10 and includes ten really useful sequencers and controllers. (I use Cells and Particles all the time.)

Patterning 3 has editable parameter layers that can be applied to MIDI tracks: MIDI Note and MIDI Note Transpose select the chromatic note. I think they are added together. But they give you two different layers to do it. e.g melody and transpose.

There is also a MIDI Note Quantization Keyboard where you can select the quantization scale. It is displayed using the Alt modifier on the MIDI tab.

This nudged me to pick up Hilda again, and I ended up drumming along to a mutating pattern for … I don’t know how long. Much more fun than a metronome! Thanks for the recommendation.

A sequencer is a word of many meanings.
All of the above, depending on the use and wishes.
Did you check the recently released glitchstep? Fast, performance oriented and still on intro offer.

It is! And I appreciate so many great responses to my very broad question. Checking out glitchstep now thanks. I’m also particularly interested in a melodic, rotating Euclidean sequencer — I think that may be Patterning 3.

cem olcay has some midi goodies, including generative/random sequencers (simple, fun & cheap)

I’ve wanted a good auto-labelling iPad controller for Ableton Live for a long long long time and finally found one that is both awesome and open source. But you need TouchOSC which is fifteen bux.

Just picked this up today. Haven’t had much time to play with it yet but it seems pretty cool so far…
