Your top _____ of 2018

Is there an SQ-1 thread? Might be fun!

Seven sound/film/art related things I loved in 2018:

  • Atomstar (Jóní Jónsdóttir, Steinunn Ketilsdóttir and Sveinbjörg Þórhallsdóttir - @ Ásmundarsalur as part of the 2018 Reykjavik Arts Festival )

  • Eighth Grade (Bo Burnham)

  • Mystery Science Theater 3000 Seasons 11 and 12 (Netflix)

  • The Joue controller

  • JFDR - Brazil

  • the continuing summer programming excellence at Mengi (Reykjavik)
(I can’t speak to the rest of the year because - alas - I’m only in Iceland during summers)

I’ll have to add Into The Spiderverse to my top movies of the year. The animation was stunning and I think it stands among the best superhero movies. The format worked much better for this story than an MCU live-action/CGI thing would ever have.

Oh nice!
My favourite teas:
DaYuLing Oolong

I’m a sucker for year end lists. Finally have a moment to sit down and contribute.

Top 5 life choices:

  • Going back into teaching programming in October. It’s hard work but boy do I love it.
  • Cleaning out the closet and getting a few fitted suits. I’m 32 and putting a bit more effort into how I look has felt wonderful.
  • Traveling more with my fiancee. We made trips to NYC and Chicago and both were wonderful.
  • Organizing and running an SICP study group with friends from June -> November. (Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs)
  • After a year or two of competing in Smash Bros Melee tournaments, just playing casually again.

Top 3 poems I read and re-read:

  • Czeslaw Milosz - Conversation with Jeanne
  • Pablo Neruda - Love Sonnet XVI
  • Czeslaw Milosz - Eyes

Top 3 eurorack modules:

  • Verbos Multi Delay Processor
  • Mutable Instruments Marbles
  • WMD Chimera
Honorable Mention: MA35 VCF, Verbos CO

Top 3 video games:

  • Hollow Knight
  • Into the Breach
  • Smash Bros Ultimate

Top 3 albums released in 2018:

  • Skee Mask - Compro
  • Janelle Monae - Dirty Computer
  • Soccer Mommy - Clean
Honorable Mention: Daniel Avery - Song for Alpha and Sam Wilkes - WILKES

Top 3 concerts:

  • Kamasi Washington
  • Janelle Monae
  • Daniel Avery (and Jon Hopkins)

Some music:

  • France Jobin - Intrication
(very detailed microsound-y beatless electronic stuff; revisited many times)
  • Fis and Rob Thorne live in a basement club
(massively dynamic rushes of electronic sound clashing and combining with taonga pūoro, successfully dodging what could be so shit about that)
  • Huge pop hooks like Troye Sivan’s Bloom, Hayley Kiyoko’s Curious, and Chelsea Jade’s Life of the Party
(definitely also very into a bunch of not-that-right-on gayness coming through in pop, honourable nods to Kehlani’s verse on KYLE’s Playinwitme, King Princess’s Pussy Is God)
  • Paperbark / r beny - Reasons to Live split
(Fave of the pretty ambient releases I listened to - I hit saturation point pretty quickly with the absolute truckloads of gentle twinkly business out there, but this one really shone for me, ahead of really solid solo albums from both bods.)
  • A bunch of dry and murky, dance-aesthetic, not washed out, no chiming sounds, ambient stuff with submerged beats, that I think of as post-Vladislav Delay and Dettinger.
(Those touch points might mean zero to anyone else. Huerco S’s West Mineral label came through with a lot. Particularly into Uon. Locally to NZ, High Harbour’s Portside WAVs lined up with the aesthetic in my head nicely.)
  • Audio Arts Aotearoa festival
(Never thought we’d get a 2-day festival of sound art and such with actually OK acts happening here, so far from anywhere; bonus joys catching up with old friends and others buzzing out similarly; even the shit bits were good)

Edit for a little “about me” stuff:

  • My sixth album and twelfth EP coming out, and liking everything I put out more than what came before (long may this delusion last  )
  • For the first time in 20something years asking a label to delay the release of my next album, as I was worried it would land too close to the last
  • Collaborating with an old friend again after maybe six years - and gentle but solid good vibes about it hitting me at the strangest times (in a work meeting, on a bus, etc.)

top thing that happened to someone else on lines of 2018:

Love this one. I loved the program as well, but only got it working once - after that it’s been looking like this :frowning:

got the 64 bit version working now!

My favorite…

Barbarisms - West in the head

It really makes me fly back 20 years in time, to The Lemonheads, Modest Mouse and Sebadoh times of my life. I can’t say how many times this record has been going from start to end since it came out.

Oskar ”Oski” Rozenberg. Just look at this kid:

I can’t remember what I had , but it was made by this sweat lady near Ban Phe in Thailand:

The one I made a recording of below. The summer in Sweden was so nice and the ability to stay in the ocean for hours without getting cold was just as nice as it was sort of scary.

instrument that I bought in 2018
Morphagene. The entire song above (from a song made by Small Feet) was just a ten seconds sample recorded into Morphagene, processed through RxMx and some wiggling. Love that thing.

Happy 2019!

need to see this. as an added bonus I just saw that the soundtrack was made using a Synthi, Koma Field Kit, & Ekdahl Moisturizer, among other things.

16 years ago I was making mix CDs for my family of the music that I had discovered and loved that year. CDs turned into thumb drives and now, for better or worse, there’s streaming.

Here’s my 2018 listening list.

Not featured on this list is my favorite tape of the year, our @n-So’s A Stroke of Blue.

thank you so much :blue_heart: its on spotify if you want to add it
