Stephen Christopher Stamper is a British-born artist and immigrant living and working in Helsinki.
Through sound work, installation and performance, Stephen has explored acoustical phenomena, the body and its relationship to illness, the manipulation and execution of code by machine, extreme metal music culture, and the a cappella community singing tradition of Sacred Harp singing.
Stephen’s artistic work has been presented as part of the London Analogue Festival (2013) and the Cambridge-wide art:language:location (2013), and, as a member of the London-based sound art collective Gwaith Sŵn, Stephen has helped organise and perform at a number of shows in gallery spaces and music venues in and around the London area. An interest in choreography led Stephen to take part in Matthias Sperling’s installation performance Walking Piece (2012), as well as appearing in Straybird’s short film Walker (2012). Both pieces had their premier as part of Footfall (2012) at Siobhan Davies Studios in London.
The now defunct Winchester-based label Runningonair Music released two albums of Stephen’s computer algorithm and magnetic tape-based compositions, 2012’s Begin Anywhere and 2014’s Echoic, and since the beginning of 2015, Stephen has been a regular contributor to Gwaith Sŵn’s Sonic Darts, a monthly show on London-based radio art station Resonance104.4fm.
In 2013 Stephen graduated from the London College of Communication with a BA (First Class Honours) in Sound Arts and Design.
